Brad Pitt Helped Save a Young Fan From a Rowdy Crowd on 'Allied' Set

May 24, 2016 @ 4:20 PM
By  Stephanie Webber

Hero status. Brad Pitt saved a young female fan from getting hurt while filming his upcoming drama, Allied, in the Canary Islands on Monday, May 23.

The dad of six, 52, was caught on camera waving and blowing kisses from on set to a crowd of screaming fans. He stopped and pointed to the little girl being pushed up against a fence before climbing over a barrier and coming to her aid. He appeared to tell other fans to move back to give her space.

Pitt's kind act didn't end there. In the video, the War Machine star — who is married to Angelina Jolie — was seen comforting the child, who appeared to be crying. Bodyguards then lifted her over the fence to safety, and the Oscar-winning actor continued to rub her back and soothe her as medics came to check on her.

Pitt was dressed in character at the time of the incident. The actor — who stars alongside Marion Cotillard, Lizzy Caplan and Matthew Goode — plays a French-Canadian spy in the Robert Zemeckis–directed thriller.

Allied hits theaters on November 23, 2016.

Brad Pitt rescues 11-year-old fan from being crushed on set in Spain

Brad Pitt to the rescue!
The actor played a real life superhero when he saved an 11-year-old from getting crushed by a mob of fans in Gran Canaria, Spain.
The heroic scene happened on Sunday when the dad of seven spotted the young girl pitted up against a fence outside of the set where he's filming the WWII flick, "Allied."
When Pitt arrived, members of the surging crowd, who had been waiting hours for the actor to appear, started taking snaps and shouting his name.

That’s when he saw the young girl, named Claudia, struggling to stand on her own among the excited crowd, La Provincia, a Spanish news outlet, reported.
According to the news outlet, she was treated on the scene by a medical team, but didn't appear to have any injuries.
The girl, who seemed anxious, then stayed with Pitt and the movie's crew on the backlot "until she calmed down."

Her mother, María Dolores Hernández, told Spain's El Diario in Spanish that she "sought help from the American star, because (he) was the only one who paid attention to what was happening to her daughter in the front row."

The 52-year-old, who is married to Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie, later posed for a photo with the young fan.

Brad Pitt Helps Save Young Fan From Being Crushed in Crowd

By LUCHINA FISHER
May 24, 2016, 5:56 PM ET

Brad Pitt doesn't just play a hero on screen; it turns out he's one in real life too.

On Monday, the star, 52, came to the rescue of a little girl who appeared in danger of being crushed by a crowd of eager fans.

While shooting his upcoming World War II film, "Allied," in Spain's Canary Islands, the actor took a break to greet fans. Waving to the crowd, which had become overzealous, he noticed the young girl being pushed up against a fence.

In a video of the incident, Pitt can be seen pointing to the girl before rushing over to help her. Along with two bodyguards, he then lifted her over the fence. He can be seen comforting the girl, rubbing her head and back as medics arrive.

After the situation was resolved, Pitt gave a final wave to the crowd before making a movie star's exit.

Brad Pitt Saves Young Fan Being Crushed by Crowd --

by Alex Ungerman 3:21 PM PDT, May 23, 2016

You can't say Brad Pitt doesn't care about his fans.

The actor was in the middle of shooting scenes in the Canary Islands for his upcoming World War II film Allied, when he he stopped to help a young fan who was getting pushed against a fence by an overzealous crowd.

Noticing the struggling girl amid the fan frenzy, 52-year-old Pitt and two bodyguards worked to lift her up and away from the throng. Thankfully, they were able to pull her over, and the situation ended safely.

Scary situation, but at least the two had a nice meeting afterwards!

Allied is set to hit theaters on Nov. 23.

Brad Pitt Is Doing Something Shocking To American Indian Reservations Partnering with Montana Sioux and Assiniboine nation

By: Steve McQueen  |@NeonNettle
 on 19th May 2016 @ 11.35am

Pitt has team up with Fort Peck, Montana Sioux and Assiniboine nation tribes in order to create some super green homes for low income families.

Brad Pitt has been known for his interest in non profit and charitable ventures, so it comes as no surprise to see what his new venture has been focused on recently. Pitt has team up with Fort Peck, Montana Sioux and Assiniboine nation tribes in order to create some super green homes for low income families.

Brad Pitt has been partenering with Fort Peck, Montana Sioux and Assiniboine nation tribes to build 20 super green homes for residents whose income levels are at or below 60 percent the area’s mean income, with a percentage of the homes reserved for seniors and disabled veterans.
More Than Talented Pretty Face Celebrity
When Pitt isn’t jet-setting to movie locations and being a father of six (three biological and three adopted), he’s running a non-profit, Make It Right.
His organization has been most notable for building 150 sustainable homes in Louisiana’s Lower Ninth Ward post-Hurricane Katrina.
“We hear stories from people who have nine families living in a five bedroom home and take ‘sleeping shifts’ to share the limited beds,” writes Make It Right communications director Taylor Royle. “Most homes are smaller, one or two bedrooms. We [met] a woman who shares a two-bedroom home with her elderly mother and her brother’s family—she and her three children sleep on the floor in the living room.”
Now, through a Low Income Housing Tax Credit Rent-to-Own program, residents in his Make It Right American Indian homes will be able buy their new green homes after 15 years of renting.
“These LEED Platinum, solar-powered homes will have three or four bedrooms and two or three bathrooms each, and built with certified Cradle-to-Cradle vendors, which means they’re developed responsibly and use reclaimed materials,” reports NationSwell. “It’s certainly a big improvement from some of the current homes on the reservation, which are rife with black mold and structural problems, resulting in high utility bills due to inefficient design.”
Using participatory democracy principles, Pitt’s organization organizers met with families and community leaders about their needs and their vision for their new homes, and how the builders can preserve the culture of the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes, such as doorways facing east or north and using tribally significant colors.
“We are enthusiastic about these home designs that reflect traditional life ways while exemplifying deep green public-impact architecture,” said Architecture for Humanity architect Nathaniel Corum.
Fort Deck, America’s ninth-largest Native American reservation, has over 6,000 tribal members living on the 2-million-acre reservation. Over 600 people are waiting for housing. That means overcrowding is all too common.
The Washington Post has reported unemployment is over 50 percent on the reservations, with approximately three out of every four children live in poverty, and the cycle of abuse imposed on the First Nation Peoples includes widespread problems with alcohol and methamphetamines exist in the communities there.

Make it Right donors are giving people a safe place to live, promote sustainable living and solar energy, and help those in need of reconstruction after natural disaster. Some options of donation are green gifts which include: solar panels, paint, native plants, Energy Star appliances, and more.
Average energy bills have decreased for the homeowners because of the green technology installed in the Make it Right homes. At first, te homes were only available to peopl whose homes were leveled from Hurricane Katrina but now, the green homes are accessible to teachers and first responders.
Lower Nine residents are still eligible and but the program is extending the offer of housing to others.
Pitt’s foundation employs lawyers, social workers, and loan workers to help the former residents of the Lower Ninth Ward whom many of which lost all documentation during Hurricane Katrina to get through the mortgage application process. The income of the applicants does not affect the applicant’s ability to obtain a home. The unsubsidized mortgage is designed to be no more than one third of the applicant’s income.
There have been problems with the New Orleans green homes, but Pitt and his followers are doing more than just trying to do the right thing. Brad Pitt and his foundation have given hope where there was none. They are doing what government could do, but is not.
While recognizing much more is needed aside from building green homes to fix reservation’s problems, Pitt and his organization members are helping to “make it right.”

Jumbleberry Crumble

Jumbleberry Crumble
INGREDIENTS
Serves: 1

FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING

  • 100 grams plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 50 grams cold butter (cut into small cubes)
  • 3 tablespoons demerara sugar

FOR THE FILLING

  • 100 grams frozen summer fruits
  • 1 teaspoon cornflour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar (or regular sugar plus a drop of vanilla)

METHOD

You will need an ovenproof tea cup or ramekin of approx. 300ml / 1¼ cup capacity.

  1. Put the flour and baking powder into a bowl and rub in the cubes of butter, using your fingers until you have a mixture like coarse sand.
  2. This is such a small amount, it's not really worth getting out the heavy machinery.
  3. Stir in the sugar and then put into a freezer bag to freeze. This mixture is enough to make 4 jumbleberry crumbles in the cups (as in the photo).
  4. Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7/425ºF. Put the summer fruits in either a cup or ramekin and sprinkle the cornflour and sugar over the top. Stir around a little.
  5. Sprinkle approx. 75g /½ cup of the frozen crumble topping over the fruit and bake the cup for 20 minutes.

Eggplant

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) or aubergine is a species of nightshade grown for its edible fruit.

"Eggplant" is the common name in North American and Australian English but British English uses "aubergine". It is known in South Asia, Southeast Asia and South Africa as brinjal. Other common names are melongene, garden egg, or guinea squash.

The fruit is widely used in cooking. As a member of the genus Solanum, it is related to both the tomato and the potato. It was originally domesticated from the wild nightshade species, the thorn or bitter apple, S. incanum, probably with two independent domestications, one in the region of South Asia, and one in East Asia.

Chocolate Cloud Cake

Chocolate Cloud Cake

INGREDIENTS
Serves: 8-12

FOR THE CAKE

  • 250 grams dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids)
  • 125 grams unsalted butter (softened)
  • 6 large eggs (2 whole, 4 separated)
  • 175 grams caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cointreau (optional)
  • grated zest of 1 orange (optional)

FOR THE CREAM TOPPING

  • 500 millilitres double cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cointreau (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder (for sprinkling)

METHOD

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4/350ºF.
  2. Line the bottom of a 23cm / 9 inch springform cake tin with baking parchment.
  3. Melt the chocolate either in a double boiler or a microwave, and then let the butter melt in the warm chocolate.
  4. Beat the 2 whole eggs and 4 egg yolks with 75g / ¼ cup of the caster sugar, then gently add the chocolate mixture, the Cointreau and orange zest.
  5. In another bowl, whisk the 4 egg whites until foamy, then gradually add the 100g / ½ cup of sugar and whisk until the whites are holding their shape but not too stiff.
  6. Lighten the chocolate mixture with a dollop of egg whites, and then fold in the rest of the whites. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the cake is risen and cracked and the centre is no longer wobbly. Cool the cake in its tin on a wire rack; the middle will sink as it cools.
  7. When you are ready to eat, place the still tin-bound cake on a cake stand or plate for serving and carefully remove the cake from its tin. Don't worry about cracks or rough edges: it's the crater look we're going for here. Whip the cream until it's soft and then add the vanilla and Cointreau and continue whisking until the cream is firm but not stiff.
  8. Fill the crater of the cake with the whipped cream, easing it out gently towards the edges of the cake, and dust the top lightly with cocoa powder pushed through a tea-strainer.

Brad Pitt Spills Clooney's Chippendales Infatuation...and Plenty More Secrets

by JENNIFER CADY
2008

Brad Pitt must not have gotten the memo that this week is Britney's and no one else's. He can have next week if he really wants it, but this week is supposed to be all about Circus, revealing birthday dresses and people we haven't heard from in forever. (Ahem, K-Fed, and look Alli Sims! We're still waiting for Sam Lutfi to pop up somewhere...)

Instead, Brad's going around giving out charming quotes to everyone and stealing Britney's momentum. Here's just a sampling of all the fun Brangelina facts we've already learned three days into this week...
On today's Ellen Degeneres Show, Brad reveals that the best way for Ellen to get George Clooney on the show is to send him "a bunch of Chippendales [dancers]": "He’s yours...three, four—no less than three."
About his irritating little 'stache, he tells Extra his goal is to bring mustaches back in style because he doesn't think they are "respected enough."
And there's this shocker: Angelina doesn't cook. The only thing she's ever made him is cereal.
He gets high from building people houses in New Orleans.
Brad does not like to talk about his personal life except when he does.
Paparazzi are uncool.
Let's not forget either that he told us his kids will not be allowed to act until they are 18.
Will he ever run out of information to share with us?

7 Movies in Which Gun Control Awards Chair Brad Pitt Glorified Gun Use

by AWR HAWKINS  9 May 2016

In the wake of actor Brad Pitt’s co-chairmanship of the May 4 Brady Bear gun control awards gala in Los Angeles, Breitbart News thought it would be prudent to list just a few of the movies from which Pitt has made millions by toting guns.

The list includes a brief rundown of the guns used in each movie, with special attention paid to certain firearms that gun control proponents are so eager to ban.

Legends of the Fall (1994) – In this film, Pitt plays one of three sons who, along with their father, fought for life and love in the American west during the era of World War I. The Internet Movie Firearms Database (IMFDB) lists five different guns used by Pitt in this film, prominent among them the Winchester Model 1873, Colt Single Action Army, Holland & Holland Paradox shotgun, and the Luger PO8 9mm.

Se7en (1995) – In this film, Pitt plays a young detective hunting a serial killer. IMFDB indicates Pitt used a Springfield Armoy M1911-A1 pistol in the filming of Se7en. The 1911 is chambered in .45 auto and is one of the most popular handguns of all time.

The Devil’s Own (1997) – Pitt plays an IRA gunman who travels from Ireland to America in order to purchase firearms. Pitt uses an AK-47 in the film, along with a number of semi-automatic handguns and an old school revolver. IMFDB provides a list of the handguns, which include a Browning BDA .380, a Smith & Wesson Model 36, and a Smith & Wesson 5946, among others.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001) – Pitt plays armed con man Rusty Ryan, who joins in on an elaborate scheme to rob a group of Las Vegas casinos. IMFDB lists a Heckler & Koch MP5A4 as the gun used by Pitt in this movie. Heckler & Koch advertises the MP5A4 as a submachine gun that fires at an approximate rate of 800 rounds a minute.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) – Pitt plays a contract killer in this film. The number and variety of guns used in this film is pretty amazing. A list of the handguns alone include the Sig Sauer P229, Sig Sauer P220, Colt 1911A1 XSE, Heckler & Koch USP Elite, Walther PPK/S, Glock 17, and NAA Guardian.

Killing Them Softly (2012) – Pitt plays hitman Jackie in this poker game heist film. The promotional photo for the film shows Pitt holding a Mossberg pump shotgun. He also used a Browning Hi-Power and Smith & Wesson Model 36 in the film.

World War Z (2013) – This apocalyptic film features Pitt in full-on survivalist mode, during which he must use an arsenal of guns to shoot his way out of a zombie-infested world. He uses a Glock 17, Remington 700 bolt action rifle, and the Colt M4A1. The M4A1 is an AR-15; the semi-automatic rifle that is extremely popular among American gun owners but so highly criticized by gun control proponents seeking an “assault weapons” ban.

A bevy of Hollywood stars reportedly attended the Wednesday night gala, including Will Ferrell, Sarah Silverman, Michael Sheen, Jenna Fischer, Judy Greer, Linda Cardellini, Clark Gregg and Mae Whitman.

Also on hand were Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and former President Bill Clinton, who delivered a rousing 25-minute speech in which he called enacting gun control in the 90s “one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Prince Harry Wants to Make Princess Diana

by CORINNE HELLER |

It's been more than 18 years since the tragic death of Princess Diana and her children, Prince Harry and Prince William, are determined to carry on her legacy.

Diana, who was known for her humanitarian work worldwide, died in a car accident in Paris in 1997 when Harry was 12 and William was 15.

"All I want to do is make my mother incredibly proud," Harry, 31, told People in comments posted Wednesday. "That's all I've ever wanted to do."

"When she died, there was a gaping hole, not just for us but also for a huge amount of people across the world," he added. "If I can try and fill a very small part of that, then job done. I will have to, in a good way, spend the rest of my life trying to fill that void as much as possible. And so will William."
Prince William & Kate Middleton's Taj Mahal Visit Gives Princess Diana Her Happily Ever After
The prince made his comments at Kensington Palace just before he left for the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando, which begin on May 8. Harry is a royal patron of the annual Paralympic-style sporting event for ill and wounded military servicemen and women and veterans from around the world. Both he and his brother work with many charities and humanitarian initiatives.

"I hope that a lot of my mother's talents are shown in a lot of the work that I do," Harry told Good Morning America in March.

In 2006, Harry co-founded the Sentebale organization in African kingdom of Lesotho. The group aims to help local children in need, including thousands affected by HIV and AIDS. Diana was known for her work to help promote HIV/AIDS awareness and made headlines when she was photographed meeting and even embracing patients, which many considered shocking at the time, as people were not as educated about the disease.

Last December, Harry visited a hospital for HIV patients that the princess had supported and highlighted how his mother helped break the stigma around the illness when she kissed an AIDS patient there, BBC News reported.

"I enjoy what I do. But I don't do things because I feel as though my mother would want me to do them," Harry told People. "I know I've got a lot of my mother in me. I am doing a lot of things that she would probably do."

Like Diana, William, 33, supports the organization Centrepoint, which helps homeless youth, and the Child Bereavement U.K., a charity his mother helped launch in 1994. The group supports families when a child dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement.

"Twenty-one years ago last month, my mother attended the launch of the Child Bereavement Charity," William told reporters in October. "Fifteen years later, I was honored to be invited to become Patron of Child Bereavement UK to continue my mother's commitment to a charity which is very dear to me."

"What my mother recognized back then, and what I understand now, is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure," he said. "As a father to two young children myself, I now appreciate it all the more."

Prince Harry kicked off the Invictus Games Sunday, but there is a notable person missing from the important event: his mom, Princess Diana.

The redheaded royal stat down with Today's Jenna Bush Hager in a pre-taped interview that aired Monday morning and opened up about the inspiration behind his multi-day sporting event and how he wishes his mother could be there.

"That was very happy memories," Harry recalled of his first trip to Disney World with his mother more than 20 years ago. "It's a huge shame she's not here, but I hope she'd be incredibly proud of what we managed to achieve."

Although he hasn't been able to turn to his mother in times of need, Harry said his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, has been an incredible role model even though she's in charge of a lot. "My grandmom's always been the boss, but my God she gives the most amazing advice," he explained to Hager. "She lets us cruise around doing what we think is right."

Of course, both he and his brother, Prince William, have made mistakes along the way. "It's part of growing up," he said. "You've got to find your own path."

And finding his own "path" is what led him to starting the Invictus Games, a competitive event that has wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans competing in different sports. Harry made it clear, however, that this event is more than just friendly competition.

"This is not a sob story—far from it. These guys don't want sympathy," he explained. "All they want is an opportunity to prove to themselves that despite my injuries, whether they be physical or mental, I'm still the same person."

Competition aside, the most this British royal is looking for is for everyone to have a good time in Florida while maintaining an "electric atmosphere" and "full" seats. The latter certainly won't be a problem, as Harry has nailed some pretty A-list names for his event. First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush and Morgan Freeman all played a role at the opening ceremony.
"I, of course, want to start by thanking Prince Harry for his outstanding leadership and for bringing the Invictus Games here to Orlando," Obama said in her introductory remarks to the immense crowd. "He is truly our Prince Charming, isn't he? And he should be proud of himself for this work."

Zucchini

Zucchini  or Courgette(British English) is a summer squash which can reach nearly a meter in length, but which is usually harvested at half that size or less. In England, a fully grown zucchini is referred to as a marrow.
Along with certain other squashes andpumpkins, it belongs to the speciesCucurbita pepo. Zucchini can be dark or light green. A related hybrid, the golden zucchini, is a deep yellow or orange color.
In a culinary context, zucchini is treated as a vegetable; it is usually cooked and presented as a savory dish or accompaniment. Botanically, zucchinis are fruits, a type of botanical berry, being the swollen ovary of the zucchini flower.
Zucchini, like all squash, has its ancestry in the Americas. However, the varieties of squash typically called "zucchini" were developed in Italy, many generations after their introduction from the Americas.

Japanese Crabcakes (Crab Cream Croquette)!

Ingredients for 2 (made about 6):
  • 200ml of milk
  • 20g of butter
  • 20g of flour
  • 80g of crab meat (fresh or canned)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • panko
  • 1 egg beaten
  • extra flour, salt and pepper

1. Heat up the milk in a pan to about body temperature:

2. Melt some butter in another pot on low until it becomes bubbly:

Then add the flour and mix well:

3. Then start adding the milk little by little. Break it up into ~3 portions, and before adding in the next amount wait for it to come to a boil. (The recipe claims that if the milk is heated up beforehand this limits the lumping. I dunno it didn’t work so well for me..!):

Keep on mixing until smooth and thickens:

(as you can see, I had to work at beating the lumps out (the recipe says use a very fine strainer and press) but I did eventually get there after this).

Then add the crab (after draining if canned. I used fresh meat):

Bay leaf:

And cook on medium, adding salt and pepper:

And cook until the crab is not watery (important when deep frying later).

Then remove the bay leaf and spread in a plate/container:

Cover, and refrigerate for an hour. Thank you, cute cabbage cover:

4. After an hour, take a look at your crab mixture, it should feel kind of like jello:

Then start making little balls by molding and throwing them back and forth between your hands:

Then dust the balls with flour:

Gosh they look like little mochi balls again.

3. Heat up some oil (about 1cm worth) in a heavy frying pan.

Then coat each ball with egg, and then panko:

Test the oil by throwing in a little egg coated with panko in to see if it’s ready (it should start crackling), and then throw in your little balls:

And cook until golden!

Then remove by shaking off the oil, and setting in a drip pan (and patting with some paper towels for extra measure):

And serve!

Goes well with some Worcester sauce, Tonkatsu sauce, or even on their own!

Crab Cream Croquettes

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 60g butter
  • 6 tbsp flour
  • 500-550ml milk
  • 160g crabsticks
  • pinch of salt and pepper
  • flour, 1 egg, panko breadcrumbs (for frying)

How To Prepare

  1. Peel and thinly slice the onion and fry it in a pan with butter on low heat.
  2. When the onion is translucent, turn off the heat. Add the flour, mix them together well, and cook for about 2-3 minutes to cook the flour to form a roux for thickening.
  3. Gradually add the milk little by little, stirring it in order to ensure no lumps remain until it starts to thicken.
  4. Add the crab sticks to the mixture and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook for about 5 minutes. Add a little more milk according to achieve desired thickness.
  6. Once it has cooked, take the mixture off the heat and spread it in a shallow tray and leave to cool. Cover tightly with cling film and keep in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  7. When it has cooled, separate the mixture into 12 portions and make into croquette shapes. You can make small ones for your lunch box. If you have time, after forming keep in the fridge for at least 10 minutes before frying.
  8. Fill three separate trays/bowls with flour, beaten eggs and panko breadcrumbs. Dip each of the croquette patties into the flour first, then the beaten egg and finally the panko until well coated.
  9. In a large pan, heat some cooking oil on medium temperature and fry the croquettes until they are golden brown and crispy. Try not to turn them over too much.
  10. When they are cooked eat with your favourite sauce.

What’s This Fried Milk Custard?

By Kian Lam Kho

Fried Milk Custard

Ingredients

  • 4 cups vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • Confectionary sugar for dusting
  • Custard
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Batter

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Combine all the custard ingredients in a medium saucepan and mix well. Be sure to blend the cornstarch completely with the milk. Heat the custard mixture over medium heat and use a wooden spoon to stir constantly while heating. As the custard begins to thicken stir the custard vigorously to prevent lumps from forming. Turn the heat off once all the mixture becomes a very thick custard. It will have the consistency of mashed potatos. While the custard is still hot spread it in a loaf pan as evenly as possible. Cool the custard and refrigerate for at least four hours.
  2. Combine the flour and baking powder together in a medium mixing bowl and mix well. Add the egg and water to the flour and mix well. Remove the cooled custard from the loaf pan. It should slip off the loaf pan easily. Cut the custard into large sticks of about two inches long and 3/4 inch thick.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok over medium heat until it is just beginning to shimmer or about 350° F. Put all the custard sticks in the batter and make sure they are all coated evenly. Individually drop the battered custard sticks into the oil and fry them for about 8 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the fried custard from the wok and drain excess oil on two layers of paper towel.
  4. Arrange the fried custard sticks on a plate and dust with confectionary sugar. Serve immediately while still hot accompanied by the condensed milk for dipping.

The weirdest dessert ever: fried milk

Fried milk
Custard:

250 ml milk
50 g cornstarch
20 g sugar

Batter:

150 ml water
100 g wheat flour
4 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp baking powder

For dipping:

Sweetened condensed milk

1. First make the custard by combining sugar and 200 ml milk in a saucepan. Dissolve the cornstarch in 50 ml of milk and slowly stir it into the mix. Set the saucepan over low heat and stir constantly until the milk gets thick. Then remove from heat. If the mixture is too lumpy, use a hand blender to make it smooth.

2. Grease a rectangular container (about 23x15 cm) with oil. Pour the mixture in the container and spread evenly. The layer should be about 1.5 cm thick, any more and the end-result gets too gooey. Any less and it will break apart when you try to get it on the pan. Refrigerate at least 3 hours until firm.

3. Prepare the batter by mixing water, flour, cornstarch and baking powder in a bowl. Take the milk custard out of the fridge and cut into small slices, using a wet knife.

4. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil on a frying pan or wok. Dip the custard slices into the batter and then fry until golden brown. Set on kitchen paper to drain the excess oil. Serve right away with sweetened condensed milk. And don't forget to enjoy!

Egyptian Tomato Salad

Egyptian Tomato Salad

INGREDIENTS
Serves: 4

  • 1 shallot (peeled)
  • 1 clove of garlic (peeled)
  • 3 - 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • approx. 750 grams vine tomatoes (approx. 5 medium sized tomatoes)
  • 1 good squeeze lemon juice
  • maldon salt
  • 1 handful chopped fresh chervil

METHOD

  1. Chop the shallot and garlic as finely as is humanly possible - or just blitz to a pulp in a processor - and put in a small bowl with the oil, a pinch of salt and a grinding of pepper, and leave to steep while you blanche the tomatoes: that's to say, put them in a large bowl then pour boiling water over them so that they are hotly submerged. Leave for 5 minutes then tip into a colander and run under cold water.
  2. Using a sharp knife, peel off the skins (which is now easy), then cut these fuzzy spheres into slices, as thick or as thin as you like (I like them somewhere in the middle).
  3. Arrange the tomatoes in a dish and pour over the dressing, using your fingers to mix well. I find it easier to use one bowl for steeping purposes and another one, later, for serving. You can let the tomatoes sit like this for a good couple of hours. Yes, some liquid will collect, but the flavours will deepen wonderfully.
  4. When you're ready to eat, either leave the dressed tomatoes in the bowl or decant to a new one, but either way, using your hands, turn them to coat, squeeze over some lemon juice, and sprinkle with Maldon salt and a tablespoon or so of freshly chopped chervil. Use another herb if you like, but there is one inflexible rule governing this salad: it must be served at room temperature. Leave it in the fridge until the last minute and all will be lost.

Baci Di Ricotta

Baci Di Ricotta

INGREDIENTS
Makes: 30 baci
  • 200 grams ricotta cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 75 grams plain flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • vegetable oil or corn oil for frying
  • 2 teaspoons icing sugar (to serve)

METHOD

  1. Put the ricotta and eggs into a bowl and beat until smooth. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, sugar and vanilla extract. Beat the mixture to make a smooth batter.
  2. Fill a wide, shallow pan with about 2cm / ¾ inch of oil. Heat the pan of oil until a tiny blob of batter sizzles when dropped into the hot fat.
  3. Drop rounded teaspoons of the ricotta batter into the pan, about five or six at a time; don't be tempted to make them bigger, boring though this is, they will puff up on cooking. You need to turn them over quite quickly so it's best to do a few at a time. You don't want to get too frantic around all that hot fat. As they turn a golden brown, flip them over and leave them for a minute or so on the other side.
  4. As you lift them out of the pan, place the cooked baci di ricotta on some kitchen towel, just to remove the excess oil. Then pile the balls of heat-bronzed ricotta on to a plate in a rough-and-tumble pyramid shape, and push the icing sugar through a small sieve evenly but thickly over them. Eat straightaway. As if...

Cannes: 4 Steps to Acing the World's Strictest Red Carpet

10:00 AM PDT 5/11/2014 by Rebecca Ford

In 2009, when Quentin Tarantino walked the red carpet in front of the Palais' Grand Theatre Lumiere for Inglourious Basterds, the theme song from Pulp Fiction suddenly came on over the loudspeaker -- and the director broke into a frantic dance, twisting and turning with his starMelanie Laurent. For a moment, everyone watched as the duo bucked the tradition of a formal line dictated on the world's most dignified red carpet (no mani cams here). "I've been dealing with many, many directors over the years, and Quentin is the only one who has a very unique relationship with the audience in France. He's like a rock star," says French publicist Jean-Pierre Vincent.
Order was restored when the Cannes Film Festival's official song, "The Carnival of the Animals," blared, but don't let France's love of the American director deceive you: The Cannes red-carpet premiere is a decorous dance choreographed over decades. Every night, 2,300 invited guests walk the Palais' bright red carpet (which is changed out every day for each official screening) as 285 photographers yell for their attention. Climbing those 24 iconic steps as hundreds of screaming fans look on can make even the most jaded actor go wide-eyed. "It's the Super Bowl of all carpets," says publicist Liza Anderson of Anderson Group PR. "It's as if you're surrounded by an ocean of people as far as the eye can see." And because it is unlike any other red carpet, it comes with its own set of rules -- and every actor must watch their step.
Dress to Impress …
The dress code is strictly black-tie -- strictly, that is, for the noncelebrity guest. As an attendee, brown shoes with a black tux are enough to get one booted. "On my very first attempt to go, I had to run back to the hotel to leave my big purse," says Sonia Mehandjiyska, Electric Entertainment's head of international distribution, who learned the hard way that only a clutch will do. But celebrities walking the carpet -- and sometimes their entourages -- can get away with a lot more than the nonglitterati. One veteran publicist says the worst offense he has witnessed was when Michael Pitt showed up in tattered jeans for 2002's out-of-competition premiere of Murder by Numbers. "Everybody was surprised, but nobody told him, 'Go back to your room and change,' " says the rep. Actors have been known to get away with a blue suit or a long tie instead of a bow tie. But why risk it? Says Mark Pogachefsky of MPRM Communications, "Always carry a bow tie in your pocket -- that's my rule."
2 … But No One Cares Who You're Wearing
"Sometimes when American actors go to Cannes, they think they'll be doing interviews on the red carpet, but then they find out that's not the case," says Pogachefsky, who has been to Cannes more than 20 times. Many publicists say the Cannes carpet is an easier trek for their stars because there are only two on-camera interview stations, both at the start of the carpet: one for TV Festival de Cannes, the official channel of the fest, and the other for Canal Plus. Didier Allouch, the reporter for the festival's official crew, also will interview celebrities who are not involved with the film being shown, but he is forbidden from asking jury members their thoughts on competition titles.
Don't Outshine the Film
The trickiest part of the red carpet is that nothing -- and no one -- is supposed to outshine the film, which can be especially challenging when a big star is in attendance. Jury members (who in past years have included Steven SpielbergNicole Kidman and Robert De Niro) are expected to arrive early so as not to take the spotlight from the cast. When Patricia Arquette attended the 1995 premiere of Beyond Rangoon, she brought Nicolas Cage. The newly married couple had not made many public appearances together, and the focus turned to them instead of the John Boorman film. "I've had a few problems with the actress or actor wanting to be with his girlfriend or wife, who has nothing to do with the film. That's a major fight I have quite often," says Vincent, adding that the Basterds premiere exemplified how A-list talent should behave. When Brad Pitt arrived with Angelina Jolie, they already had agreed Pitt would walk with his cast then return to walk Jolie down the carpet. "That was the most elegant thing to do," says Vincent.
4 Stay in Step With Tradition
When a film's talent reaches the bottom of the stairs, they walk together up the first half, where they are greeted by Cannes president GillesJacob and festival director Thierry Fremaux. This year, Pierre Lescure, who will become president in 2015 when Jacob steps down, is likely to attend many premieres, but he will not take the focus from Jacob by greeting talent. This high-profile meet-and-greet is one of the most important moments on the carpet, say publicists. Usually a director or actor who has been to Cannes before introduces the newcomers. After more photos, the Cannes brass and the stars walk the remaining steps together and pose again for cameras at the top of the stairs. They will stay in the theater's lobby until the seated area is completely quiet. Only then will they take their reserved seats at the center, in row I. Says Allouch, "Cannes is always on time -- always."
