Red Alert: 6 Signs Your Body Is Trying To Tell You You’re Stressed

Whitney Hawkins on Healthy Habits
 Oct 29, 2015 • 12:00 pm

Stress is a bitch.
It creeps up on you like a dark cloud, making it impossible to work, eat or sleep.
The body is hardwired to react to stress and protect you from impending danger.
This was vital in times wrought with life-threatening elements, like famine and wildlife. But clearly your body hasn’t adjusted, and it doesn’t realize your boss isn’t actually going to kill you.
When you have an upcoming deadline or an impending crisis, it treats these situations as real threats. This causes alarms to go off in your body and jump-starts the stress response.
Normally, the body resets itself after the perceived threat has vanished.
But when stressors are constant and your psyche constantly feels under fire, you run the risk of entering a state of chronic stress.
Chronic stress is bad for so many reasons. It puts you at risk for heart problems, sleep problems, anxiety and depression, making it extremely vital for you to keep your stress levels in check.
Watch out for these six warning signs of chronic, dangerous stress:

1. Panic Attacks

You know the feeling. You feel like you’re juggling 10 balls, and at any minute, they’re going to come crashing down on your face.
Stop these racing thoughts with deep breathing.
Go hide in the bathroom, at your desk or in a conference room. Place one hand on your stomach and one on your chest, while you breathe deeply in through your nose and out your mouth.
Focus entirely on your breathing. Repeat until you feel a deep state of zen.

2. Racing Thoughts

Anxiety is a symptom of stress. This can cause you to experience racing thoughts, and you completely lose focus.
Put down your phone (seriously) and step away from the computer. Make a list of the top five things you want to accomplish that day.
Breaking tasks down can instill confidence in your ability and make projects appear much more manageable.

3. Tightness In Your Muscles And Joints

Do you clench your jaw or tighten up your shoulders at the thought of that upcoming deadline?
Stress causes our bodies to be on high alert.
Relax with some progressive muscle relaxation. Moving from your head down to your feet, clench each body part tightly for five seconds and release.
You will feel more at ease afterward, and ready to take on the day.

4. Stomach Ache And Heartburn

If you’re in the bathroom literally every 10 minutes at work, this could be because of your stress levels.
Anxiety and worry can upset the balance of digestion. In some people, it slows down digestion and causes bloated, painful constipation.
In others, it speeds it up and causes those frequent trips to the bathroom.
Stress can also lead to that burning feeling in your stomach or esophagus, which is known as heartburn.
Managing your stress is the best, but for a quick fix, sip on a drink containing ginger.
It has been known to calm stomach aches and has a number of other amazing benefits.

5. Insomnia

Sleeplessness is extremely common among individuals with high stress levels.
Often, people get in their beds to try to go to sleep, but they experience racing thoughts and restless legs.
According to The Chicago Tribune, this may be caused by technology in the bedroom. The blue light from your smartphone and computer screen suppresses melatonin, which is the hormone that helps us sleep.
Screens also disrupt the circadian rhythms that control our sleep-wake cycles.
Kick your technology out of bed and catch some extra zzz’s.

6. Weight Gain

According to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Southern California, “the immediate response to stress can be a temporary loss of appetite. For some people, chronic stress can be tied to an increase in appetite and stress-induced weight gain.”
Whenever we feel threatened, our body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones help us in situations of danger and distress.
But unfortunately, your body doesn’t know the difference between a lion chasing after you and that paper you have due next week.
Because of this, your body still responds to stress with the hormonal sign that you need to replenish your nutritional stores.
This is why you crave pizza every time you get stressed out (and send Domino’s that pizza emoji).
Stress is real, and it affects us in so many ways.
The next time you feel overwhelmed, listen to your body.
The hunger, insomnia and panic attacks aren’t just in your head.

Sam Smith's Writing's on the Wall becomes first ever Bond No 1

Singer’s theme tune to the new Bond film Spectre tops UK singles charts, beating competition from Justin Bieber

Sam Smith’s theme song for the new James Bond movie Spectre has become the first in the history of the franchise to top the charts – despite being greeted with mixed reviews.
Writing’s On the Wall soared straight to No 1 in in its first week of release with 70,000 combined sales and streams. It makes Smith the first artist to achieve a No 1 song with a Bond theme, beating his predecessor Adele whose song Skyfall reached No 2.
Of the 23 previous Bond themes, many of which have performed dismally in the charts, only Duran Duran’s 1985 track A View to a Kill matched Skyfall’s chart rating. Bond classics such as Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever did not even break into the top 20.
Smith, 23, beat off competition from Justin Bieber to get his fifth No 1 with the track. It reportedly took him just 20 minutes to write and he called it the “quickest song I’ve ever written”.
In a video accompanying the song’s release, Smith said the lyrics, were “not about me, about my life, it’s the James Bond song and it’s the first time I’ve had to play a little bit of the character”.
The London-born songwriter told Official Charts that Writing’s On the Wall making No 1 was “a special moment I’ll never forget”.
Smith said: “It’s incredible that it’s become the first No 1 Bond theme song. It’s been an unforgettable experience working with [producer] Barbara [Broccoli] and [director] Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy.”
Smith’s emotionally wrought take on the Bond theme tune was greeted with a mixed response from critics and fans. The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis wrote that it sounded “less like a Bond theme song than a latterday pop ballad – the kind of thing that X Factor contestants have a crack at”.
However, the song did gain the approval of former Bond Roger Moore who tweeted: “Sam Smith has delivered a very haunting and wonderfully orchestrated #Spectre theme song. Well done!”
Some have also speculated that the lyrics, which include lines such as “How do I live? How do I breathe?/ When you’re not here I’m suffocating/ I want to feel love, run through my blood” might indicate that Spectre will showcase a more sentimental side to Bond when the film is released at the end of October.
According to Smith, however, Mendes had tweaked the lyrics to make sure Bond did not seem too vulnerable.
Despite Adele not reaching No 1 with her theme song, Smith still has quite a legacy to follow – Skyfall was widely regarded to be the best Bond tune in years.
It won the Bond franchise its first Oscar in 47 years for Best Original Song and Daniel Craig admitted that hearing Adele’s theme had brought tears to his eyes. He said: “I cried. From the opening bars I knew immediately, then the voice kicked in and it was exactly what I’d wanted from the beginning. It just got better and better because it fitted the movie. In fact the more of the movie we made, the more it fitted it.”
A survey released on the same day as Writing’s On the Wall also names Skyfall as the British public’s favourite ever Bond theme song, followed by Bassey’s Goldfinger and Live And Let Die by Paul McCartney.

Sam Smith - Writing's On The Wall (from Spectre)

Sam Smith "Writing's On The Wall" lyrics

[Sam]
I've been here before
But always hit the floor
I've spent a lifetime running
And I always get away
But with you I'm feeling something
That makes me want to stay

I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no more use in running
This is something I gotta face

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won't be afraid

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

The writing's on the wall

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

Hatsumōde, the first shrine visit of the new year

Rurousha 流浪者: Hatsumōde, the first shrine visit of the new year: Now that Christmas is over, it's time to prepare for Japan's *real* celebration, New Year. Overnight, as if by magic, the Chris...

Inaka

Inaka
-(田舎, inaka) is a Japanese term meaning a rural area or the countryside

Hatsumōde

Hatsumōde (初詣 hatsumōde?) is the first Shinto shrine visit of the Japanese New Year. Some people visit a Buddhist temple instead. Many visit on the first, second, or third day of the year as most are off work on those days. Generally, wishes for the new year are made, newomamori (charms or amulets) are bought, and the old ones are returned to the shrine so they can be burned. There are often long lines at major shrines throughout Japan.
Most people in Japan are off work from December 29 until January 3 of every year. It is during this time that the house is cleaned, debts are paid, friends and family are visited and gifts are exchanged. It would be customary to spend the early morning of New Year's Day in domestic worship, followed by sake—often containing edible goldflakes—and special celebration food. During the hatsumōde, it is common for men to wear a full kimono—one of the rare chances to see them doing so across a year[citation needed]. The act of worship is generally quite brief and individual and may involve queuing at popular shrines. The o-mamori vary substantially in price.
Some shrines and temples have millions of visitors over the three days. Meiji Shrinefor example had 3.45 million visitors in 1998, and in the first three days of January 2010, 3.2 million people visited Meiji Jingū, 2.98 million Narita-san, 2.96 millionKawasaki Daishi, 2.7 million Fushimi Inari Taisha, and 2.6 million Sumiyoshi Taisha.[1][2] Other popular destinations include Atsuta JingūTsurugaoka Hachiman-gūDazaifu Tenman-gū, and Hikawa Shrine.[3]
A common custom during hatsumōde is to buy a written oracle called omikuji. If youromikuji predicts bad luck you can tie it onto a tree on the shrine grounds, in the hope that its prediction will not come true. The omikuji goes into detail, and tells you how you will do in various areas in your life, such as business and love, for that year. Often a good-luck charm comes with the omikuji when you buy it, that is believed to summon good luck and money your way.
