★★★ Very good
World War II movies have been around since…well World War II, that you start to wonder if there’s still room for more. But I have faith in director Robert Zemeckis (“Cast Away”, “Forrest Gump”) and I have nothing but admiration for Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. They play intelligence officer Max Vatan and French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour, who meet in Casablanca in 1942 to execute a deadly mission. They bond, fall in love and later on get married in London. What happens next? You’ll have to see for yourself. Suffices to say that from the casting of Pitt and Cotillard to the brilliant depiction of life during wartime (with a keen eye for detail), Zemeckis has managed to deliver the goods. Fans of war movies, and the lead actors in particular, should be eminently pleased. Pitt is tremendous in the role, but it’s Cotillard who anchors the film with an unforgettable performance. Ultimately, “Allied” means to grab us hard from the very first moment and never let go. As someone who loves movies set in the 1940’s, I was instantly hooked. It may not be flawless, but it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. That’s enough for me to recommend it.

Film review: Allied starring Allied

The gala screening of Allied was all about Brad Pitt, the big star of a war drama that sees French national treasure Marion Cotillard co-star alongside him. Allied is in cinemas this Friday 25 November (cert TBC). Audiences long to see for themselves the on-screen chemistry between the co-stars. I am not sure whether they chose to stay apart during the premiere on purpose, but newly separated Brad and pregnant Marion certainly did not seem to have any off-screen chemistry. Off you go to the cinema to watch this old fashion war romance and thriller that I personally liked and believe will appeal more to women than men.
The story
From iconic filmmaker and director, Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Castaway, Back to the Future franchise), Allied is a spy story about intelligence Canadian airman officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who parachutes into the French Morocco desert in 1942 on special assignment from the British military. In Casablanca, he encounters undercover French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Together they pose as married Nazi sympathisers, while plotting to assassinate the German ambassador. They fall in love, and reunite in London, where they marry and raise their daughter. Their relationship blossoms in Hampsted in London but is soon threatened by the extreme pressures of the war. I leave you to find out what happens next to avoid spoiling the rest of the story.
The verdict
When you see the name Robert Zemeckis on a movie poster, you expect a lot from the film. ‘Bob’ (as Brad Pitt was calling Zemeckis at the premiere) is the man behind Back to the Future franchise and certainly knows how to send movie stars back in time. Allied is a World War II spy thriller with romance and war glamour at the centre of the story. The film might not be too convincing in terms of reconstruction of locations and historical facts but it certainly pays tribute to old fashioned Hollywood movies in style. The beautiful and talented cast obviously helps. The on screen chemistry between Brad and Marion is real and Marion told the audiences at the gala screening that she had three weeks with Brad to prepare and work on their performances before shooting, which is a lot of time and not normally available to actors. The steamy love making scene in the car during a sand storm in the middle of the desert is very convincing and led to the media to speculate that Brad and Angelina’s divorce was caused by Brad’s presumed affair with the French actress. But Marion quickly dismissed the false claims and displayed a baby bump declaring her unconditioned love for her husband.
40s fashion is very well represented and some of the original costumes were displayed at the premiere.
The green silk dress Marion wears on the night of the murder at the German embassy is stunning.
The retro 40s revival transpires in vintage clothing, vehicles, luggage, extravagant chandeliers, London during the blitz, the Spitfires. The list is endless.
At times Allied reminded me of a Hitchcock film: the suspense and the twists in the characters whose identities and backstories we believe at first. These are elements of old thrillers that are often lost in big blockbusters these days where special effects overtake the story. Ultimately Allied has a good story.
Brad Pitt has been critised for his flat performance in this movie, but he’s not playing an eccentric role here so his character is supposed to be a bit flat as a military officer. I personally like him in this film and he’s extremely good looking with his hair dyed to make him look younger. In fact, as a non Brad Pitt fan overall, I have re-discovered him in Allied.
This is a film to go and watch with girlfriends who will certainly appreciate the love story, the fashion and the good looks of the stars. Not a bad Christmas movie at all.

McALESTER, Okla. — “Allied” blends romance, action and a thrilling plot to produce one of the year’s better films.
The spy thriller starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard has its share of action and deceptive adventure — but it’s a romanticized and overly decorative film that softens the excitement. This will translate to a fantastic blend of action and romance for some, but it will leave others wanting for a harder-hitting film.
I found the combination a successful one — for the most part. If you like your movies to resemble a Pottery Barn catalog, “Allied” is going to be a real treat. There are metal cigarrette cases; dapper leather jackets, and shoes and briefcases; Panama hats; Casablanca rooftops; WWII prop planes; old-timey sunglasses and more. There is more than enough to convince an audience member WWII was just a beautiful time where styles were better, smoking wasn’t so bad and spies were capable of love. It’s enough to make a hipster salivate.
The action is enough to get the heart beating at an accelerated rate from time-to-time. Pitt and Cotillard play Max Vatan and Marianne Beauséjour respectively, both of whom are spies during WWII. The pair meet in Casablanca during the opening scenes of the film after being assigned to the same mission. Both are trained assassins, excellent liars and they fight their way into, and out of, several tight spots throughout the film. Vatan, a Canadian, and Beauséjour, from France, fall in love while on assignment and decide to get married and move to London mid-war.
It’s at this point things can get to the groan-inducing points in the film where the love story is frustratingly juxtaposed with the action. The loving couple get pregnant and Beauséjour delivers their baby on the streets of London amid a German air raid which blows up the hospital they were carted from moments before. The loving embrace between the couple while they hold their newborn and buildings explode in the background is too much.
But those scenes are limited and the film is saved by the plot.
Sometime after moving to London and getting married, Vatan is informed his wife is suspected of being a double-agent and is actually a German spy. For a man who fell in love with a woman, had a child with this woman, and continues to fight to liberate this woman’s home country of France from the Germans she is suspected of working for — Vatan is understandably upset. The film centers around this conflict and the audience is left guessing along with Vatan about the true nature of Beauséjour’s allegiance. Who does she work for? What is true, if anything, about who she is? Is it entirely a mistake, and is she who she says she is? Does she really love Vatan? Can Vatan really love Beauséjour?
It’s more complicated than Christmas shopping for your in-laws.
The confusion and mystery surrounding Beauséjour elevates the film to an entertaining level. It moves from a romantic, WWII-era action film to a genuine thriller. Audience members are left in the dark and forced to piece together the mystery as Vatan works to uncover the truth himself. The romance proves to be a necessary part to the film because it leaves a viewer feeling betrayed and angry when Beauséjour is accused of being a spy, much like Vatan. But wait, should we feel betrayed? Or are we going to get to the bottom of a big misunderstanding? The back-and-forth between these possibilities is riveting.
“Allied” is capped with a must-see ending. If you’ve seen as many movies as I have, you sometimes start to think you’ve seen it all in these sorts of situations. However, “Allied” wraps up in spectacular fashion. There will be no spoilers included here so I suggest you go and see for yourself.
War might not be a romantic adventure like “Allied” depicts, but for entertainment during a December 2016 weekend, you won’t find much better.

The Hamptons is apparently the place to be for the holidays

Steven Spielberg was a paying customer for Brad Pitt’s latest movie, “Allied,” in East Hampton over the weekend.
The movie icon caught the film with godson Jake Paltrow during the Thanksgiving break.
Also celebrating the holiday in the Hamptons, we hear, were Stephen and Christine Schwarzman, who treated their guests to a hayride in Water Mill — singing Bob Dylan songs along the way.
Mariska Hargitay and her husband hosted their annual Turkey Bowl football game at a local park, where players included Alec Baldwin and George Stephanopoulos.
In other tag-football action, the Lauder family hosted 75 guests for Thanksgiving along with a game that pitted the Turkeys versus the Hams.
Meanwhile, secretary-of-state candidate Rudy Giuliani hosted a dinner of his own, and Trump booster Carl Icahn attended Allen Grubman’s annual meal.
VIPs including Julian Schnabel, Donna Karan and Bob Colacello flocked to a Guild Hall screening of “Jackie,” while another hot film that screened was “Hidden Figures.”

Brad fuckin' Pitt is 50?? Shit, we're all getting so old.
Damn. He still looks like he's 35. Must have some Asian genetics we don't know about.
The cinematography in this was fantastic. The scenes of Brad Pitt going to the basement to get the briefing was what stuck out to me as good cinematography. The story didn't have as many twists and turns as I had expected but kept me tense the entire time and I think the feeling I felt about the story mimicked Pitt's character's emotions.
I thought it was evident from the trailer that she was a spy, but really didn't think it would be this emotional or psychological. Great acting as well, especially at the end with Pitt as he comprehends what just happened. Anyways, great movie that I highly recommend.
Brad and Marion have amazing chemistry. Zemeckis direction is great. The historical accuracy felt adequate for the story.
Like the other poster, i'm a huge Pitt fan and i'll always support/enjoy his movies but that doesn't mean i'll dismiss a movie being bad. This one was great. The movie was so visually appealing and I thought the acting from both Pitt and Cotillard was great. I'd definitely watch it again.
Cotillard and Pitt were made for that time period. I mean I get things like costumes, sets, etc., but I feel if you plopped modern day Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard into the 1940's, they would just fit right in. Part of the reason why I loved this movie was their acting.
So for three years I've hosted an event called Brad Pitt Tuesday. I'm sure you could guess, but it's where we watch a BP movie every Tuesday night. This year, I moved, got a new job, and had a ton of other stuff go on. But I still tried my best to get at least 1 Brad Pitt Tuesday a month in.
With all the crazy going on in my life, I called it quits, and had one final BPT at the theater tonight.
With that being said, my review is biased as I love Brad. But I truly enjoyed this one. It was so gripping. I did want more action, but the tense scenes were really riveting. I really didn't know if she was a traitor or not for the longest time. Really, up until Max found out. I thought the pacing was rushed, I really wanted more from a lot of the scenes. An extended cut would really let this movie breathe I think.
I really did enjoy it though. The acting was great, the story was fun, the visuals are fantastic
The ending was soul-sucking and devestating.
I never thought she was great looking (or a great actress, for that matter), but that kiss to her brother at the Oscars was really the straw that broke the camel's back, for me.
No doubt Angie has used her time with the children to trash Bad and work on turning the children against him. Can’t imagine why child services allows the children to stay with Angie who is abusing them emotionally and mentally by trashing their father.
.which proves that she couldn’t care less about what is best for the kids. It is, always has been and always will be, about what is best for Angelina and what Angelina wants.

Brad is taking a big break from women and totally focused on securing joint physical custody of his children. Nothing else matters to him at this time. Once the custody battle is done, and after a bit more time to heal from this bruising is when he'll think of a hook up. It could probably happen when he least expects it and with someone outside the entertainment industry. Ya never know........

This is a well made movie and a real throwback to something that would have been made between 1965-1975 and probably done well at the box office. Not in 2016 though. The theater I saw it at had only 10 people in the audience and no one under 45. Marion Cotillard is excellent here and Brad Pitt is not to far behind her but she carries the show and the audience's attention. One nitpick is Pitt's French which is about as good as his Italian in Inglorious Basterds. He probably would have been caught in 5 secs as soon as he was introduced to Cotillard's French friends. I also found the closing shot of Medicine Hat,Alberta to be a bit odd where it was made to look like a lush,green and forested English countryside. The dominating feature of the area is rolling hills,coulees and short grass vegetation where everything looks tan or straw with few trees much like Wyoming or Texas.

I know what it is like to write with a deadline and expectations, but I looked this up and realise you are going to get cranks telling you that you misspelled "discomforting". Ah, the English language.
Having seen the trailer, I have to admit the way the trailer explains the plot and the way you, Peter, explain the plot, well... Let us just say I am a good deal more interested after reading this review. "Your wife is a German spy" and "your wife is a German spy who killed and is impersonating the person you think she is" are two very different things. The latter being much more intriguing.
This may well turn out to be Brad Pitt's best film since Fight Club.

When I do catch one of his movies though, I’m always surprised at how strong an actor he actually is. Looking through his filmography on imdb, you can see he’s tried to avoid stereotypical “hero” roles (much like Johnny Depp) to avoid being typecast, suggesting brains behind the blonde. Let’s hope he keeps picking good roles in future, and then maybe one day he will get the Oscar he should have won 15 years ago
Brad Pitt is so underrated as the fantastic actor he is because of his good looks (which are pretty great). But he has put in some incredible performances. Even Babel (which I hated) he was still fantastic. Your spot on about his performance in Twelve Monkeys as well, totally unreal.
I love that he has attempted so many different types of roles as well, not just falling into one type of character. He really has pushed himself with a lot of the roles he has taken on.
In cinema ready for Allied. Love me a bit o' Brad Pitt..
First half was amazing, the scene at the cafe was great, as well as obtaining the invite for the party. LOVED that August Diehl made an appearance in this, was super surprised to see him. I loved Brad and Marion's chemistry, wasn't expecting to cry at the end.
Overall 8/10 for me, go see it.

I think that Brad is a very underrated actor, people can't seem to get past his handsomeness. Every movie in which he appears in is instantly made better by his performance. I can honestly say he's my favorite actor because he has made so many movies that are on my "favorite movies" list: Seven, Interview with the Vampire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Twelve Monkeys, Snatch, Ocean's Eleven, Burn After Reading and Troy. I hope he'll get the recognition he deserves.

A great movie and thoroughly enjoyable.Students of philosophy will enjoy this as well. When it comes to familu vs country where will your loyalty lie?with respect to the plot it was gripping and so was the character development.The movie also helped me in brushing up my francaise.

I guess the first 3 are more family movies where you can take at least older children? Allied is probably not something for kids, so I'd say it's doing quite well if it's in 4th place after a Disney animated movie, a JK Rowling "Harry Potter universe" movie, and a Marvel comic adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
So, I got a chance to see this recently and while, I thought it was very high quality film, I was completely unprepared for how sad the movie's ending was going to be.
Marion was very, very excellent in this and I feel she absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance. Her character was very complex and interesting. My heart broke into a million pieces for her. And, it's true what Marion said about her at the premieres, she's mysterious, but also very simple, too. Brad was lacking a little of his old charisma at the beginning of the film, during the mission scenes, with the rooftop scenes being a notable exception. I though he was quite smooth in those. But, after they get to London in movie, he was pretty much back in old form with charm for days. I do think "Max Vatan" was a little too much of a straight laced stiff, especially since it seems so incongruent with his life as a spy. Why exactly this dichotomy exists is not well explored in the film. Yeah, he's a patriot and all that jazz, but still...Now, when he was doing spy stuff, I loved the character and thought he was very cool.

- Whether any religion or cultural issues exist - Scratch this one, they have been raised with no religion or cultural issues which would apply in any rational way.
- The stability of the home environment - Egad. Chaos. The parents have BRAGGED about this chaos. There is no discipline, no rules are followed, no sound nutrition, no bedtime
- Whether there are other siblings in the home - Siblings, too many siblings
- Adjustment to school and the community - NO school, NO community.
- The substantiation of any abuse or neglect allegations - I'm guessing there is much which has been or can be substantiated.
End take on this? Yes, Holie sounds much crazier. I don't think it's going to go well for her, and I think she is still aware enough that she now understands that.

The cinematography in this was fantastic. The scenes of Brad Pitt going to the basement to get the briefing was what stuck out to me as good cinematography. The story didn't have as many twists and turns as I had expected but kept me tense the entire time and I think the feeling I felt about the story mimicked Pitt's character's emotions.
I thought it was evident from the trailer that she was a spy, but really didn't think it would be this emotional or psychological. Great acting as well, especially at the end with Pitt as he comprehends what just happened. Anyways, great movie that I highly recommend.

Like the other poster, i'm a huge Pitt fan and i'll always support/enjoy his movies but that doesn't mean i'll dismiss a movie being bad. This one was great. The movie was so visually appealing and I thought the acting from both Pitt and Cotillard was great. I'd definitely watch it again.
Cotillard and Pitt were made for that time period. I mean I get things like costumes, sets, etc., but I feel if you plopped modern day Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard into the 1940's, they would just fit right in. Part of the reason why I loved this movie was their acting.
So for three years I've hosted an event called Brad Pitt Tuesday. I'm sure you could guess, but it's where we watch a BP movie every Tuesday night. This year, I moved, got a new job, and had a ton of other stuff go on. But I still tried my best to get at least 1 Brad Pitt Tuesday a month in.
With all the crazy going on in my life, I called it quits, and had one final BPT at the theater tonight.
With that being said, my review is biased as I love Brad. But I truly enjoyed this one. It was so gripping. I did want more action, but the tense scenes were really riveting. I really didn't know if she was a traitor or not for the longest time. Really, up until Max found out. I thought the pacing was rushed, I really wanted more from a lot of the scenes. An extended cut would really let this movie breathe I think.
I really did enjoy it though. The acting was great, the story was fun, the visuals are fantastic
The ending was soul-sucking and devestating.
I never thought she was great looking (or a great actress, for that matter), but that kiss to her brother at the Oscars was really the straw that broke the camel's back, for me.

At times the pacing of the film slows to a crawl .
In the end Allied is a very good story with just enough suspense and fevered action to recommend seeing it at the theatre.

This is a well made movie and a real throwback to something that would have been made between 1965-1975 and probably done well at the box office. Not in 2016 though. The theater I saw it at had only 10 people in the audience and no one under 45. Marion Cotillard is excellent here and Brad Pitt is not to far behind her but she carries the show and the audience's attention. One nitpick is Pitt's French which is about as good as his Italian in Inglorious Basterds. He probably would have been caught in 5 secs as soon as he was introduced to Cotillard's French friends. I also found the closing shot of Medicine Hat,Alberta to be a bit odd where it was made to look like a lush,green and forested English countryside. The dominating feature of the area is rolling hills,coulees and short grass vegetation where everything looks tan or straw with few trees much like Wyoming or Texas.

Having seen the trailer, I have to admit the way the trailer explains the plot and the way you, Peter, explain the plot, well... Let us just say I am a good deal more interested after reading this review. "Your wife is a German spy" and "your wife is a German spy who killed and is impersonating the person you think she is" are two very different things. The latter being much more intriguing.
This may well turn out to be Brad Pitt's best film since Fight Club.

When I do catch one of his movies though, I’m always surprised at how strong an actor he actually is. Looking through his filmography on imdb, you can see he’s tried to avoid stereotypical “hero” roles (much like Johnny Depp) to avoid being typecast, suggesting brains behind the blonde. Let’s hope he keeps picking good roles in future, and then maybe one day he will get the Oscar he should have won 15 years ago
Brad Pitt is so underrated as the fantastic actor he is because of his good looks (which are pretty great). But he has put in some incredible performances. Even Babel (which I hated) he was still fantastic. Your spot on about his performance in Twelve Monkeys as well, totally unreal.
I love that he has attempted so many different types of roles as well, not just falling into one type of character. He really has pushed himself with a lot of the roles he has taken on.

First half was amazing, the scene at the cafe was great, as well as obtaining the invite for the party. LOVED that August Diehl made an appearance in this, was super surprised to see him. I loved Brad and Marion's chemistry, wasn't expecting to cry at the end.

I think that Brad is a very underrated actor, people can't seem to get past his handsomeness. Every movie in which he appears in is instantly made better by his performance. I can honestly say he's my favorite actor because he has made so many movies that are on my "favorite movies" list: Seven, Interview with the Vampire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Twelve Monkeys, Snatch, Ocean's Eleven, Burn After Reading and Troy. I hope he'll get the recognition he deserves.

I guess the first 3 are more family movies where you can take at least older children? Allied is probably not something for kids, so I'd say it's doing quite well if it's in 4th place after a Disney animated movie, a JK Rowling "Harry Potter universe" movie, and a Marvel comic adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
So, I got a chance to see this recently and while, I thought it was very high quality film, I was completely unprepared for how sad the movie's ending was going to be.
Marion was very, very excellent in this and I feel she absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance. Her character was very complex and interesting. My heart broke into a million pieces for her. And, it's true what Marion said about her at the premieres, she's mysterious, but also very simple, too. Brad was lacking a little of his old charisma at the beginning of the film, during the mission scenes, with the rooftop scenes being a notable exception. I though he was quite smooth in those. But, after they get to London in movie, he was pretty much back in old form with charm for days. I do think "Max Vatan" was a little too much of a straight laced stiff, especially since it seems so incongruent with his life as a spy. Why exactly this dichotomy exists is not well explored in the film. Yeah, he's a patriot and all that jazz, but still...Now, when he was doing spy stuff, I loved the character and thought he was very cool.
So, that's what I think!
No. Jolie does not understand. She is incapable of reason or logic. She does not understand cause and effect. She only understands what she wants. And she doesn't get that she is the problem. Her entitlement issues and her zero emotional intelligence means she only sees things from one singular perspective - her own.

- Whether any religion or cultural issues exist - Scratch this one, they have been raised with no religion or cultural issues which would apply in any rational way.
- The stability of the home environment - Egad. Chaos. The parents have BRAGGED about this chaos. There is no discipline, no rules are followed, no sound nutrition, no bedtime
- Whether there are other siblings in the home - Siblings, too many siblings
- Adjustment to school and the community - NO school, NO community.
- The substantiation of any abuse or neglect allegations - I'm guessing there is much which has been or can be substantiated.
End take on this? Yes, Holie sounds much crazier. I don't think it's going to go well for her, and I think she is still aware enough that she now understands that.

Sorry, Jolie is disgusting and it speaks volumes that the DCFS and FBI found NO evidence of child a-b-u-s-e, that so many stars have defended Brad, and that Jolie clearly used the private flight as leverage when she'd already leased a hole-up house for herself and the kids long before she filed for divorce but let her camp tell all and sundry that the flight was the reason. The sheer scale of the malice aforethought involved and cruelty of Angelina is breathtaking. To do that to someone who took on your adopted kids, had more with you, and - even now - hasn't come out and told the world what a horror story she is. I hope Brad goes on to live a happy life and his relationship with his kids continues. If I could tell him one thing it would be this: don't for even one second think that anyone sane believes the lies Jolie spun. You're a good man and it is known.

According to the former nannies, the kids were getting out of control, no sleeping routine, whatsoever, binge watching cartoons at night with nannies, whilst parents soundly slept next door. Ive often questioned and wondered about the celebrity world, do they, does she, like the public opinion of her being filled with hate and destruction towards her? I watched the movie yesterday, it was a heartbreaking love story, the ending was very sad, everyone in my theater cried, both Brad and Marion were amazing in the movie especially Marion, Brad also delivered very emotional scenes. The multiple sex scenes were very hot and intimate. Their chemistry was amazing and earned the rumors between them. You feel there was something between them or they were just too good at their actings. The pacing of the movie was a little slow, not much actions, it was a beautiful tragic love story between two crazy in love people in the war.

I've read like 10 reviews from different places and they're all complaining about things they liked in Marvel films. Also, if the movie was as bad as they say it was, there would be at least one consistent issue for the movie, but each of them had different views. One said there was too much story, one said there was not enough story. One said there was too much action, one had the galls to say not enough action. The difference is so obvious I was actually wondering if they were talking about the same movie. But whatever. Critic rating has only stopped me from watching a movie ONCE, and that was for Fantastic Four. This rating won't stop me from watching BvS. It's still my most anticipated movie of 2016.

And Marion Cotillard admitted that she could not have asked for a more 'amazing partner' to work with than Brad Pitt, in her interview with The Telegraph on Friday.
Having shot down all affair rumours last month, the French actress, 41, had nothing but high praise for the 52-year-old Moneyball star, who she revealed was incredibly 'determined' and 'committed' to his role.
The brunette beauty could not help but gush about Brad's professionalism in the interview, and confessed he was a dream to work with both on and off screen.
She first described the star as: 'An amazing partner who is such an amazing actor.'
Before continuing: 'I was very impressed by his determination and commitment and he's such a good man besides being an amazing actor. He's proved it many times.'
Despite their winning chemistry however, the La Vie En Rose beauty admitted she found the sex scenes in the movie very uncomfortable to film, due to their overly choreographed nature.
'It's an awkward situation,' she continued on one particular scene which sees the pair getting hot and heavy in a car during a sand storm: 'We laughed because... this is so weird... And then we go into this, and then I'm going on top of you, and then we are going to kiss.'
The pair have proved they have a strong bond at the recent premieres for the flick - after they were pictured fooling around together and high-fiving on the red carpet in London last week.

We all first heard about this movie when it had the unfortunate association with the biggest breakup news in Hollywood this year -- the divorce of power-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. One of the reasons being floated was an alleged affair of Pitt with his co-star in the film, French actress Marion Cotillard. This had shades of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (2005), incidentally also a film about married spies, where Brad Pitt dumped Jennifer Aniston in favor of his co-star Jolie. Gossip aside, the quality of this film looked outstanding based from the trailers alone. This was THE movie to watch this week.
It was 1942. Canadian intelligence officer Max Vatan got together with French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour in Casablanca, Morocco. They pretended to be husband and wife in order to infiltrate a German function to execute a dangerous mission together. The couple fell in love for real, got married in London, and had a child. However, Max was presented with military intel that threatened their blissful union. Defying his orders, Max is determined to fix the problem in his own way.
The first thing that really strikes you with this film is its glossy and lush cinematography by Don Burgess (Oscar winner for "Forrest Gump," 1994). This is clearly reminiscent of big epic romantic films in the past like "The English Patient". The desert scenes were sweeping and breathtaking, as was the love scene in the car during a sandstorm. The production design (by Gary Freeman) and costume designs (by Joanna Johnston) were also of Oscar-worthy quality and elegance. The lead actors both have qualities of Old Hollywood glamour which completes the film's captivating look of cinematic prestige.
Even now in his 50s, Brad Pitt can still do these romantic lead roles very well. The camera loves his visage and he looked impeccable whatever he was wearing, be it just undershirts or a formal tuxedo or a full uniform. He has been in a couple of other World War II films just recently, "Inglorious Basterds" (2009) and "Fury" (2014), so he fit into this role quite smoothly. He was also able to handle creditably the dramatic requirements of the role, that of a desperate husband who had to secretly find a way to save his marriage and still make everything look normal on the surface.
Marion Cotillard was gorgeous and vibrant as her character was supposed to be. Her depth as an actress was in full display here in a complex role, enhanced by her fashionable outfits and radiant smile. She owned the Morocco scenes with her magnetic outgoing screen presence. It was too bad that her role somewhat got curtailed when the story moved to London, but her Marianne was clearly the driving inspiration behind Max's every action even if we do not see her on screen.
Director Robert Zemeckis should be credited for the incredible suspense he had created in the last sequences of this film. He took his time, which had us all hanging on to the edges of our seats as he built-up to the emotional and sentimental climax. This sentimentality was what won Zemeckis the Oscar for "Forrest Gump" (1994) after all. He also used the mirror a lot for many of his scenes, probably hinting on the illusions spies have to create in their line of work, hence some imaginative blocking and camera angles were employed.
Overall, I thought this film was engaging on a visual and emotional level. The beauty of the landscape and the actors will transport you to another place and time as only Hollywood can. This extreme glamour may keep you distant but you will be kept interested and hanging on up to its ultimate resolution. Admittedly, the romance part could have been better built up in the first act especially with Max's cold detached personality making chemistry difficult. Definitely though, the wartime intrigue and mystery investigation give the film the spice and excitement it needs later in the game. 8/10

She has spent 12 years saying what a wonderful man, partner/husband & father he is. Now she tries (and fails) to trash his reputation - and separates him and the children. Angelina should be ashamed of driving Shiloh to the point of desperation. If she'd handled the split sanely and civilly, her child wouldn't be burdened with the role of truce maker. It IS a burden. It makes the poor kid think she can reunite the couple if she tries hard enough.
I'm quite sure Angie's been told it's best for kids to have regular contact with both parents -- and that regular, reassuring contact is crucial immediately after a split. It's pure BS to pretend she's not letting Brad see the kids for the "health of the family." This does not surprise me in the slightest. On what grounds is Jolie continuing to claim that she should be awarded sole physical custody? I do not see any court agreeing with her on that one - it is so clearly against the childrens' best interests.

Just saw Allied. Wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving afternoon, and a wonderful addition to Zemeckis' oeuvre - he's been one of my directing idols since I was a teenager! Thanks to the fantastic staff at @ipictheaters Pasadena for making it an even better experience.

The sheer scale of the malice aforethought involved and cruelty of Angelina is breathtaking. To do that to someone who took on your adopted kids, had more with you, and - even now - hasn't come out and told the world what a horror story she is. I hope Brad goes on to live a happy life and his relationship with his kids continues. If I could tell him one thing it would be this: don't for a second think that anyone sane believes the lies Jolie spun. You're a good man and it is known.

It's in Jolie's best interest that Pitt takes, say... four years to resolve all of the issues she and her sources have diagnosed him with. By then their youngest children would be 12 and old enough to where a judge might consider their preferences for which parent they want to live with.

Moneyball, Inglorious Basterds, Se7en, Fight Club, Assassination of Jesse James, Troy, Burn after Reading, Ocean's series, Babel, Curious Case of Benjamin Button- he's going to be in The Counselor and 12 Years A Slave. Anyone who thinks he only stars/plays/whatever in shitty movies needs to GTFO.(Get the fuck out)
I thought he was amazing and under-appreciated in the movie, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. You fear him in one scene; in the other, you understand complex emotions and thoughts without needing much dialogue. Not too many actors can convey this.
You can feel his presence and sternness in the movie, Tree of Life. This is done mainly by his deliberate actions and movements.
And in Burn After Reading, he's a good comedic actor without silly gags or overdoing it.
I don't know too many actors who cover this much range successfully. I must agree with Ratnakar Sadasyulaand say that his good looks cause many to overlook his skill. In my opinion, Brad Pitt is very much underrated as an actor.
Hates him, watches and knows all his movies enough to list them.
