Moonlight shines at Film Independent Spirit awards on eve of Oscars

Sunday 26 February 2017

Oscar-tipped drama Moonlight was the big winner at this year’s Film Independent Spirit awards, picking up six awards, including best feature.

The low-budget tale of a black gay man growing up in a deprived Miami neighborhood now holds the record for the most awards won by a single film this decade at the ceremony. Jeremy Kleiner thanked fellow producer Brad Pitt who “continues to inspire us with his curiosity and his desire for good work”.

The film also won best director for Barry Jenkins, best cinematography, best editing, the Robert Altman award and the prize for best screenplay for Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue was the inspiration for the project.

“There are a lot of people who pushed that script away from their desks,” a tearful McCraney said. He went on to thank those who made the decision to sign onto the film without worrying about the potentially damaging effect a gay film would have on their careers.

Oscar nominee Isabelle Huppert won best female lead for her role in darkly comic thriller Elle, winning out over Natalie Portman and Annette Bening. “I think good cinema is always independent,” she said. “I want to thank [Elle director] Paul Verhoeven for being so independent.”

Casey Affleck was also named best male lead for playing a grieving brother in Manchester by the Sea. At the end of his speech he made reference to Trump’s government, saying: “The policies of this administration are abhorrent and they will not last. They’re really un-American.”

Hell or High Water’s Ben Foster beat out category favorite, and Oscar nominee, Lucas Hedges for best supporting male for his role in the heist thriller while an excitable Molly Shannon picked up best supporting female for playing a mother dealing with terminal cancer in comedy drama Other People.

The award for best documentary was won by O.J.: Made in America, the critically acclaimed seven-hour film that’s also the favorite to win the same award at tomorrow’s Oscars. Another Oscar front-runner, German comedy Toni Erdmann picked up best international film. “I’m really happy and proud to stand here as a female director because it’s still not normal enough that women are directing films,” director Maren Ade said. The acclaimed film was recently picked up for a Hollywood remake, set to star Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig.

Period horror tale The Witch was awarded best first feature while writer-director Robert Eggers picked up best first screenplay. He thanked “all the Puritans” for writing so much of their lives down, making his job easier.

“We like to think of these awards as the ones without Mel Gibson” co-host Nick Kroll said before joking about the Academy’s acceptance of this year’s best director nominee after his “anti-Semitic” jokes. He then claimed that, using the same eight year forgiveness logic, Steve Bannon will be featuring at the Oscars in 2024.

His comedy partner John Mulaney made the first political reference of the night, referring to the downbeat nominees: “These films are, to quote the president ‘sad!’”

The hosts also predicted that speeches throughout the night were likely to include more Trump jabs. But given the small scale of the ceremony, Kroll joked: “In terms of impact, you could give your speech direct to camera or you could whisper it in the bathroom.”

Mulaney added: “Hey Trump, you and Robert Durst are both rich sociopaths from New York real estate empires but somehow Robert Durst is more likable”

The awards arrive on the eve of this year’s Oscars where Moonlight is one of the front-runners with eight nominations alongside La La Land and Manchester by the Sea.

Brad Pitt Leveraged His Name and Shingle for ‘Moonlight’

Chief Film Critic
Peter Debruge
FEBRUARY 16, 2017

Of the nine films nominated for best picture, fully one-third would not exist were it not for an A-list movie star leveraging personal clout to get the movie made in a system that simply doesn’t take those kinds of risks these days.

“Fences” is by far the most conventional example: Paramount had acquired the rights to August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play in 1987 for Eddie Murphy to star, though it took three decades — and Denzel Washington’s involvement — to get it made.

Matt Damon willed “Manchester by the Sea” into existence. The project originated when Damon commissioned a script from playwright Kenneth Lonergan (coming off a trying experience on “Margaret,” in which Damon played a small role). Though he had originally entertained the idea of starring in “Manchester” himself, Damon ultimately decided to give the lead role to longtime amigo Ben Affleck’s kid brother, Casey.

But of the three projects, the most remarkable is Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” which found its patron saint in Brad Pitt. Jenkins had impressed the Hollywood community with his 2008 ultra-low-budget, black-and-white debut feature, “Medicine for Melancholy,” landing an agent at CAA and developing a handful of other projects that never went forward.

Then, at the 2013 Telluride Film Festival, Jenkins moderated a Q&A with director Steve McQueen for “12 Years a Slave,” where he met Pitt, one of that film’s producers via his Plan B shingle. Pitt was so impressed with Jenkins that he agreed to back an adaptation of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unproduced play, “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.”

Needless to say, Hollywood doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to greenlighting sensitive coming-of-age stories (unless they hail from hit YA novels), and those centered on African-American characters are rarer still. But Jenkins already had a champion in producer Adele Romanski. With the encouragement of Pitt and his Plan B partners, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, it became possible that a movie as special as “Moonlight” might come through “the system,” shepherded by experienced hands who could ensure that it found a distributor (in A24) and wouldn’t get lost upon release.

There are those who argue that pundits shouldn’t make such a big deal about Chiron, the main character in “Moonlight,” being black. Or gay. And yet, it does matter, because Chiron reps such a rare, yet vital, voice on the American cinematic scene.

“Moonlight” isn’t a rap star biopic (à la “Straight Outta Compton” or “Get Rich or Die Tryin’”) or a Tyler Perry movie (one of the precious few black voices permitted to adapt non-Pulitzer-winning plays in Hollywood). And while it’s hardly the only film to shine a spotlight on contemporary black lives, nearly all the others are made on the margins, as independent productions without the resources or experience to break out of the African-American or LGBT festival circuit.

Jenkins’ film is masterful on its own terms and if one thing’s certain, there are more, equally essential stories out there waiting to be told. But until the studios see the value in stories like “Moonlight,” we can only hope the stars continue to align behind them.

Chance meeting with Brad Pitt helped Barry Jenkins make Moonlight

8th Feb 17 | Entertainment News

A chance meeting with Brad Pitt led to Barry Jenkins securing the backing he needed to make his Oscar nominated movie Moonlight.

Over the past decade Pitt has increasingly moved into production with his company Plan B Entertainment, backing films including Selma and 12 Years A Slave.

In 2013, Jenkins was working at Colorado's Telluride Film Festival while struggling to finance Moonlight, a coming-of-age story based on an unproduced play by Tarell Alvin McCraney. It was there that the 37-year-old filmmaker was chosen to compere a Q&A with Pitt and 12 Years A Slave's director Steve McQueen.

In an interview with The Guardian, Jenkins says his hosting duties allowed him to conduct the "sweetest ambush" on Pitt, after he secured an invitation to dinner with the star and Plan B executives.

"I was so damn naive I didn't realise a company like Plan B would be interested," he explained to the publication. "I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed."

In September last year (16) Jenkins was attending Moonlight's own Telluride premiere, an event he describes as being like "an out-of-body experience".

"I didn't believe it until I was actually up on stage introducing my own film," he added. "I was standing in my dreams."

The film, starring Naomie Harris, Janelle Monae and Mahershala Ali, has received rave reviews and is in the running for eight Oscars, including nods for Best Director and Best Picture.

"I did have reservations," Jenkins admitted about taking on the project, about a gay man's struggle to find his place in the world. "Can I, as a straight man, really tell this story fully - in the way it needs to be told? But I approached this as an ally. Tarell is very openly gay and I felt like if I preserved his voice it would at least pass the smell test."

In addition to its multiple Oscar nominations, Moonlight also took home the Best Motion Picture - Drama prize at the Golden Globe Awards.

Brad Pitt Makes Surprise Appearance at Golden Globes to Present Moonlight

BY BLAKE BAKKILA
JANUARY 8, 2017

Brad Pitt surprised everyone when he presented the film Moonlight at the Golden Globes on Sunday night in a rare public appearance.

Pitt, 53, took the stage to a loud applause from the crowd. The actor looked sleek, wearing a classic black tuxedo for the occasion.

“It’s born of the courage of a group of actors willing to strip to their souls and express their humanism inside mistake and misstep and misdeed,”Pitt said during his presentation of the film, which was named Best Film by the National Society of Film Critics on Saturday, according to Variety.

“It is Barry Jenkins profound belief that we all stand at the threshold of change and forgiveness where we only grant acceptance and love to ourselves,” he continued. “Nominated for 6 Golden Globes, this is Moonlight.”

Pitt’s production company, Plan B, partnered with A24 to produce the coming-of-age drama about a gay, African-American boy, and the film has been earning Oscar buzz.

Last November, Pitt made his first public appearance since news broke of his split from Angelina Jolie, when he attended a private screening of Moonlight in Los Angeles.

Pitt, 53, and Jolie, 41, have a voluntary temporary custody agreement in place that allows the actor supervised visitation with the children.

The father of six has had weekly supervised visits with the kids since October, according to a court filing by Jolie.

Brad Pitt's Surprise Appearance at the 2017 Golden Globes Nearly Brought the House Down

by BILLY NILLES | Mon, Jan 9, 2017 11:25 AM

Brad Pitt, 2017 Golden Globes

As if there was any doubt, Brad Pitt's still got plenty—and we mean plenty—of fans in Hollywood.

The beloved actor surprised the crowd at the 2017 Golden Globes on Sunday towards the end of the telecast to deliver the introduction package for Barry Jenkin's film Moonlight, nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama (his company Plan B produced the film)—and the sight of the actor had everyone in the audience losing their minds.

As with most introductions right after a return from commercial break, the crowd offered their initial tepid applause as they began to settle back into their seats from their quick trip to the bar in the back, clearly only half paying attention. But once they realized just who it was standing before them, the cheers grew to a roar.

The actor's largely been out of the spotlight since his divorce from Angelina Jolie—and their subsequent custody battle over their six children—made headlines in September of last year. While he made his first public appearance at a private screening of Moonlight in Los Angeles in November, his time on stage at the Globes marks his first TV appearance in some time.
And in the blink of an eye (or rather, the duration of the Moonlight sizzle reel), Pitt's presence on stage was over. In his place was host Jimmy Fallon, ready to introduce the next presenters, leaving us with only our brief memories.

Until next time, Brad. But don't make us wait so long, you hear?

Brad Pitt’s Plan B Team Explains How They Discover Bold Films Like ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Lost City of Z’

Eric Kohn
Oct 15, 2016

The co-presidents of the company responsible for two New York Film Festival titles explain their thinking behind the varied projects they're tackling at the moment.

Brad Pitt has a famous face, but these days, his name is even more ubiquitous on projects that he doesn’t star in.

Plan B, the production company Pitt co-founded with Brad Grey and Jennifer Aniston in 2001, has gained traction in recent years as one of the most significant entities supporting auteur-driven work in the United States. In 2013, the company helped bring Steve McQueen’s Oscar-dominating “12 Years a Slave” to fruition. Over the next two years, the company’s highlights included Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” and Adam McKay’s “The Big Short,” both of which struck a marked contrast to more traditional studio offerings. Earlier this fall, the company unveiled “The Voyage of Time,” Terrence Malick’s cosmic documentary about the origins of the universe.

But there may be no better demonstration of Plan B’s current focus than the two films it produced that screened this month at the New York Film Festival: Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” a decade-spanning look at the life of a young gay black man in Miami, and James Gray’s ambitious “The Lost City of Z,” a rough-hewn adventure drama about British explorer Percy Fawcett’s lifelong attempt to discover a mythical city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. (A24, which co-produced “Moonlight,” will release the film on October 21; “The Lost City of Z” will be released by Amazon and Bleecker Street next year.) Both movies couldn’t have been made by the traditional Hollywood studio system; they’re singular works that reflect the creative freedoms of their directors, and Plan B provided a crucial foundation for them to exist.

For the last three years, Plan B’s operations rely on the efforts of two leading individuals, co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. While Pitt remains focused on several of his own movies, Gardner and Kleiner do the bulk of the work involved in setting up new projects and scouting for talent. In the following excerpts from a recent conversation, the duo talk about how they find projects these days and what sort of filmmakers they’re looking to support.

DEDE GARDNER: We spend a lot of time reading, a lot of time watching movies in small corners of libraries and hotel rooms. It’s probably our favorite thing to do. We fall in love with a movie and we reach out. We ask to meet, see more work and listen to what they’re interested in, what world they want to live in, what stories they want to tell. Time and time again, those conversations can result in movies. They just need to be had in an honest space. The only intentions will ever be to continue the conversation, and not think about these things as products, but adventures that we might embark on together.

JEREMY KLEINER: Brad Pitt has encouraged a culture of that: watching and trying to understand what an artist is doing and what they want to say. It’s stating the obvious, but it’s not peripheral. If you’re inspired by something, if something grabs you, if you read about something that causes you to be curious about it, follow the curiosity and see where that takes you. That philosophy has led us to some very interesting people and their films. He’s a very supportive, intellectually curious and passionate partner. We’re very, very lucky for that.

DG: Brad’s involvement sort of depends on the movies. He likes our movies, obviously, but he has created a space for us to work that is, I would suggest, entirely singular. By that I mean that he believes in the shelf life of movies, he doesn’t believe in the notion that a movie has to see a successful opening weekend to work. He reminds us all the time of the movies that we discovered long after their initial release, and he believes that we should tell stories that we feel like we would die if we didn’t. He feels like we should work as hard as we can because what we do is a privilege. It’s enabled us to be very liberated in our ambitions. It lets us really stretch, because we feel incredibly supported and blessed to chase our passions.

Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner

We’ve been trying to get James Gray’s movie made for, what, eight years?

JG: Nine years.

DG: Our instincts feel the same as they always have: What stories do we want to tell and with whom do we want to tell them? We love filmmakers, we love directors, we love writers. And we certainly love movies that ask questions and make people think and ask questions to themselves. In an interesting way, both “Moonlight” and “Lost City of Z” have people at the center who evolve, shape-shift and wonder, “What will I be remembered for? What is my purpose here? How do I ensure keeping the bar raised for myself?”

JK: We’re also interested in the counterintuitive: James is writer-director, Barry Jenkins is a writer-director, Mike White is a writer-director, Bong Joon-Ho is a writer-director…

DG: Andrew Dominik is a writer-director.

JK: Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, with whom we’re doing another show at Netflix. That’s another very personal, intimate collaboration. David Michod is a writer-director, Felix Van Groeningen is a writer-director. We don’t need to list everybody, but the common thread is…

DG: Adam McKay!

JK: Adam McKay is a writer-director. Maybe there’s something about people who write and direct that draws us in — they feel very specific, very authored, they’re very much the point of view of somebody that causes people to see the world in a potentially new way or tell a story with new insight. That’s very appealing.

DG: We’re just holding on for dear life like everyone else in some regards. The landscape for distribution is constantly changing. Just as an example, we had a pretty significant experience with “The Normal Heart.” We tried for years and years to make that as a feature, and we ended up making it as a movie for HBO. Millions and millions of people saw it. I don’t believe that would have happened if we’d been able to make it as a feature. We couldn’t get the money to do that. We’re learning as we go. We certainly make stories to be seen and we’re very curious to see how these next couple years of releases unfolds and what that means for eyeballs. But we also love sitting in a dark theater. So I hope that there’s room for all of it to exist.

by KENDALL FISHER

Brad Pitt has stepped out in public for the first time following his divorce from Angelina Jolie.

The actor attended a private screening of the upcoming and highly-acclaimed film Moonlight, for which his production company, Plan B, is listed as one of the executive producers. The event was held in Los Angeles, and he was joined by close pal, Julia Roberts. The pair hugged and smiled for several photos before the event.

The outing marks the first time Pitt has been photographed following the announcement of his divorce from Jolie in September.

 COMMENTS:

Brad looks wonderful. It is so good to see him. Brad, you are loved. You are a good man, a good father. We all know that. Fight for your rights. Nobody believes the lies about you. Get out there and live your life. Somehow, the right things will happen.

Brad does look great! I hope he reaches out to friends and family to feel the love everyone is sending his way! Poor guy. I'm sure they have not reached a permanent agreement. Angie's camp (by Angie's camp, I mean Angie) are pathetic. No way Pitt deserves to lose his children. Absolutely no way. Hopefully his A-list friends rally around to support him and just as many rally around to out Angie on all of the eccentric, crazy selfish behavior she has exhibited for years. Seriously never watching anything with her in it again. Good luck at the box office lady. Glad you're smiling Brad!

Brad looks great. It is nice to see him smiling. Moonlight is a fine film. They did not reach a custody agreement. It is her camp spinning the situation around. The current living situation is the same until the judge makes a ruling on custody. His filing on joint custody has remained the same.

Nice to see him supporting Moonlight. Hopefully it will continue it's small box office success and maybe get many Oscar nominations.

Yes, I'm hoping so. Hope it comes to my city. Eager to see it. Plan B is awesome.

He looks good stay healthy Brad

hoping the love and support of his friends he will bounce back. We love you Brad

He actually looks younger when he isn't having the blood sucked out of him by Angelina.

I wish you well,Brad.

I support you brad

Throw her (Angelina) in the gutter, and go find another, come on his Brad Pitt

Others said not so fast. A source told Page Six: “There was no new agreement signed . . . [it] was simply an extension of the pre-existing, completely voluntary temporary arrangement they had previously agreed to.”

Our source said, “It makes no sense because Pitt filed for joint custody on Friday . . . days after this supposed ‘new’ agreement. There were absolutely not any child-care advisers of any kind imposing or in any way involved with this decision.”

Meanwhile, as we reported, despite all the off-screen drama, Pitt’s planning to attend the premiere of his new Paramount film, “Allied,” on Wednesday in Westwood, Calif.

Just to p off AngeliNuts even more!

Well, I remember when this happened last night, it was so confusing. Just got home, turned on TV and Harvey explained its a spin from Angie herself.

Angelina as usual loves to lie! She will be proven the nasty, ugly witch she is when it comes time to go to court!
Not only will she lose Pitt, but also her 6 kids. She deserves that as apart of her karma for being such a nasty human being.

I'll be glad when she is stripped of all her faux humanitarian awards and is fired from the UN. She's obviosly not practicing what she preaches. I thought she has constantly denounced war conflicts? I thought an UN Special Envoy should live an exemplary righteous life? Well well, now she responsible for waging a war and spreading out negativity in the world through her despicable behavior!

I hope the UN is watching right now and sees her for the scum she is. How can you have a person talk about goodwill and helping others while airing their dirty laundry and smearing her own husband in the press?
Hypocrisy it is!
I mean, even make-up brands knew Jolie was toxic and couldn't sell anything, I am very curious as to why the UN didn't dump her a long time ago.

People website also confirmed Brad will attend Allied LA premiere. I am excited.

Angelina is BS

Angelina is a full blown liar.

Very sad story indeed. I seriously and honestly feel for all these 6 kids especially the adopted ones who were saved from terrible beginnings in life and who now have to endure the "psychosis of Hollywood" That said, Angelina Jolie will remember the date she dragged Brad Pitt into a nasty custody battle as the date she put nails into her future career and life! I think she messed with the wrong dude!

Nah, just confirming that AJ has backed the truck over Pitts reputation once more.

Brad was photographed with Julia Roberts last night at the moonlight private screening......And today we have phycho Angelina handing out false reports.......She better get use to her kids potential stepmom, even though Julia is just a friend.....But wacko Jolie going nuts again

Moonlight is expected to get Oscar Best Picture nod. Brad's Plan B continues making awards worthy movie.

She was but she gave up her share when she divorced him. She wanted nothing to do with Pitt after he cheated on her.
See, she could have treated him just like how Angelina is treating him right now but she didn't. She chose to take the high ground.
That just shows you that Jen is a good person at heart, and Angelina is evil at heart. (PLAN B)

I was on a Brad fan site. they have Chinese Allied posters, Chinese has some really hot steamy stills from Allied. Brad and Marion look so damn hot together.

Marion or any french actress has 0 desire of living the Hollywood madness. Vanessa Paradis kept Johnny in France for a reason!

hogelina is going to implode.

Of course NO CUSTODY AGREEMENT has been signed..they are not divorce yet!!!! A TEMPORARY custody agreement has been signed with the ongoing DFCS recommendations. The headline is incorrect and this is a gotcha article.

Push forward Brad...don't give up !!!!!! (Wales, United Kingdom)

Do the children go to school like all other children ?? Team Brad

The malignant narcissist's favourite game...triangulation. Team Brad

Team Brad for me.

This lie has been circulated by Angelina, to make it appear as if the authorities have found something negative and enforced "therapeutic visits" only. She is playing with fire, if this goes to court her own addictions and disorders will be discussed. But she'd rather they both lost the kids than have Pitt win them, and he knows this. That's why he delayed his response asking for joint custody in the hope that her counsel could talk her out of pursuing sole custody. She is really not a well cookie.

He should fight for his rights to have join custody and he should not give in.

The children should be kept out of this completely. He is their father and unless there is concrete proof he is a risk to them he should have automatic joint custody. When will the law change to respect fathers rights? It take 2 people to make a baby.

I'll bet the arrogance of these kids have no boundaries. Ask anyone who's ever had teens.. It's a like a war zone nearly everyday.

Never a good idea to marry a nut job, with historic and well documented daddy issues, who has a tendency to cut people out of her life, and who has ironically spent most of her life committing the same acts that she has publicly vilified her daddy for.

I am going to go see this film, looks really good....team Brad!
(London, United Kingdom)

i am glad he is getting back to work and some sense of normality. I think he needs to pick himself up purely for his kids who rely on him. We all know their mother is not stable, he cannnot appear too broken down or affraid as she will clearly use him being unable to attend work commitments (premier of a movie he produced and stars in) against him, as proof of him being "weak and emotionally unestable". He doesn't need to talk, let her keep talking. Just stand calm, classy and digified. Show the world who's the daddy.

Aww bless Gotta love this guy He's not actually done anything She's a spiteful lady

This man is dream, how can Angelina treat him like this?

Ange has had him by the balls for a very long time. The photos of Brad with Julia Roberts he looks thin, but actually good, like the old Brad. He will have tremendous support and will be ok.
(New Zealand)

Angelina wants his movie to tank so she's threatening him and he's flying low. This is a good enough reason for me to go see his movie and support him. The crazy one is still spinning.

I would not put it past The Crazy One to have deliberately timed her move to sabotage Brad's chance of winning an academy award. She's insecure and jealous enough to have done this. Only room for one Oscar winner in her life.

He already looks better, now that he has the vampire off his throat.

absolutely, he should take the example from his 1st ex wife, not once did she shut herself away

Just walk the red carpet with your head held high Brad! U don't have to answer anything to anyone, its your right its your personal life. May this movie would be a success!

As he should! He shouldn't let her hold him down cause that's her intentions!

The love scenes in this movie sent Angelina over the edge. Period. Hope it's a huge success for Brad.

Good girl, Julia! A friend in need is a friend indeed and she has been there for him. I admire his public silence on the drama and feel absolute contempt for the public savaging of him that Angelina indulged herself with.

My instinct tells me that he is a decent kinda guy though for Jolie I think she is deeply weird and probably a bit manipulative.

Looks better than he has in years

I imagine,George Clooney looking at this pic and thinking, "we got him back"-. (Geneva, Switzerland)

He's well rid. Looking good again.

Brad looks so good...AJ sucked the life out of him .,...looking forward to seeing Allied.

He looks, relieved and happy. Its seems he has lived his life under a boot.

Good for Brad, don't become a shut in. Good luck, divorce is hell.

No, she alienated him from his friends and she also had very bad relations with his family so he was forced to see them less too - Brad's mum is a counsellor by profession and knew this woman was very mentally unwell. Hopefully he can rebuild as his life soon as possible.

He'll be fine. Time and his loving parents and family and BFF's (George C, Julia R, Matt Damon and the gang from 'Ocean's Eleven') will put back this poor broken man again. Angie is like a beautiful super-Tank; irresistible, but destroys everything in her wake. I hope Brad manages to have enough input into the lives of his children before they too are lost, like their mother who I REALLY thought had sorted herself out, still is. I wish them all peace, for life is short.

Love you, Brad! Glad Julia was there to support you. You're gonna come back on the top.

he's already starting to look better in my opinion. I know he loves his children and considers them a tremendous blessing, but I know the "what the h3ll was I thinking!?" thought has to play in his mind on a daily basis. I miss the Brad from the 90's and 00's prior to Angelina. He's still got plenty left in him to offer, I hope he gets back on track, and protects/stays very involved with ALL of his children. They need him. I also want him to hurry up and finish the next "World War Z" sequel soon, haha.

I miss Brad from that era too; he was part of the era when I had lots going on in my own life and you put some people, music, films, into certain frames of reference - the last time he looked great was in Troy - but she took him and turned him into a shadow of his former self. Now it looks as though he's recovering from her. Good for him.

Even though he must be under enormous strain right now, he looks almost as good as he did when he was with Jennifer! Angelina was the death of him, thank God for a rebirth!

Wonder if Angelina has any friends? (South Africa)
No, just her creepy brother.

We've missed you Brad. Still looking great and don't worry the kids will know you love them and will realise what their mum is doing.

Looks about ten yrs younger already

He looks a little thin and a bit stressed but apart from that he looks quite good. Welcome back Brad (United Kingdom)

Jolie turned Brad into a bit of a dweeb! This looks promising... hopefully we will get the old cool Brad back soon!
(Dublin, Ireland)

Julia seems such a lovely person.

It may be a grainy picture, but he looks better than he has done in a long time, says a lot really. Good on you Brad.

I think he's been out of love and unhappy for a while and his trusted life partner, the mother of his children, turned on him like a jackal instead of supporting a civil, kind separation and co-parenting priority. Things only get sweeter and better from here Brad. The only way to look is up and forward.

He looks better!!

glad to see him happy again after escaping from the evil woman

He looks happier!

Brad looks relaxed and better than we have seen him in a long time . Glad his friends like Julia are starting to rally around him. I believe he will be ok and will share parenting, whether Angie likes it or not . I think most of the public support is for him and his kids .

Sometimes you don't realise how controlled and unhappy you are in a relationship until it ends

He looks so much better, healthier!

Brad looks hot!

aww that buzz cut hair is so reminiscent of his younger days. always had a major crush on him, still a very good looking man!!
(dubai, UAE)

he looks Better right now

divorce does him well  i guess. he looks good

he looks great! #TeamPitt

Hell yeah, you better STRUT that confidence! You GO boy!

Good for him! Angie always praised him as a wonderful husband & father now he suddenly turned into an abusive jerk.

I'm glad! Don't let that lunatic get him down he should have expected her to be a nutcase just think what he had to deal with crazy

Good for you Brad!

meanwhile you get all your info from her people. (tmz)

He actually looks younger when he isn't having the blood sucked out of him by Angelina.

 Damn right he deserve better...

I'm delighted that Brad Pitt is out and about.  #Moonlight deserves to get as much press coverage as possible. Such an amazing film.

He looks good!

‘Moonlight’ Breakout Star Ashton Sanders Still Hasn’t Met Brad Pitt

“When I do, I’m going to lose my mind,” the actor tells TheWrap of film’s famous executive producer

Ashton Sanders’ performance in Barry Jenkins’ indie darling, “Moonlight,” is earning high marks as the film continues to build awards season buzz.

The heat on the new drama, in which Sanders plays a bullied teen in ’90s Miami, is quickly transforming the young actor into a rising star.

And Sanders has only just turned 21 years old.

“I’m taking meetings with directors and reading scripts,” he told TheWrap of new opportunities that are now opening up to him.

Sanders has a small-but-growing resume, including a cameo in last year’s NWA biopic hit “Straight Outta Compton.”

“I’m trying to figure out what’s the next right move to make,” he said in our recent interview. “I want to keep doing projects that speak for people within the community and tell different types of meaningful stories.”

When asked what it was like to meet the film’s famous executive producer, Brad Pitt (whose Plan B Entertainment produced the film, along with distributors A24), Sanders admitted, he doesn’t know.

“I have yet to meet the man,” he said of Pitt. “It’s definitely on my bucket list and when I do, I’m going to lose my mind.”

“Moonlight” is based on a play and portrays a boy named Chiron at three stages in his life as he struggles to cope with a drug addicted mother (Naomie Harris) and his own blossoming homosexuality.

Its subject matter isn’t completely foreign to Sanders, who grew up in Carson, California, just south of Los Angeles. “I was bullied in elementary to middle school,” he said, admitting that “it messed with my self esteem. I definitely wasn’t the kid playing sports. I was super different.”

There’s another real-world connection: “My mother was out of my life for a period of time and both of my parents struggled with drug addiction at certain points.”

For Sanders, acting has served more as therapy than a strategic career move. “It has been an outlet for everything going on in my life, emotional stress,” he said.

The part of Chiron is played by three actors in total in “Moonlight”: Alex R. Hibbert is the young version, Sanders depicts high school-aged Chiron, and Trevante Rhodes is the adult character.

Rounding out the cast are Janelle Monáe, Andre Holland and Mahershala Ali — who has taken Sanders under his wing.

“I actually have no scenes with him in the film, but he was the first person I met in Miami when we started filming,” Sanders said of the “House of Cards” and “Luke Cage” star. “He’s such a wise dude. He tells me I’m here for a reason and to be myself do what I know how to do.

“Mahershala has been there to uplift me and talk to me when I’m going through some hard times,” said the emerging actor.

He said that Ali doesn’t hesitate to pick up the phone when he calls. “When I don’t feel I’m enough, he’ll remind me who I am and it gives me a reason to keep on growing and learning and experiencing and doing this job.”

Audiences were reported to be overjoyed when “Moonlight” first screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 99 percent.

It expands in theaters this weekend just days after topping the indie box office on its debut — grossing an estimated $413,175 from four theaters for an impressive per screen average of $103,685.
