So meta! Melissa Etheridge revealed on Wednesday, October 5, that Angelina Jolie's team reached out to her after she commented on the Oscar winner's divorce from Brad Pitt — so she wrote a song about it.
The Grammy winner, who used to be friends with the Moneyball star, sang the song on Watch What Happens Live about being contacted by Jolie's team — which is being led by crisis manager, Judy Smith, a "fixer" who was the inspiration for Kerry Washington's Scandal character — with what she described as "a subtle warning."
"There are people whose job it is to kind of fix things for celebrities," said Etheridge, who spoke about the Brangelina divorce while on WWHL host Andy Cohen's SiriusXM radio show on Monday, October 3.
"I haven't spoke to Brad in forever," the 55-year-old continued in her interview on Wednesday night. "Every time I say something it gets turned around and twisted and all of a sudden I'm saying something about [Angelina] … so I thought I would do what I do best, and I wrote a song about it today."
The song, which she finished writing in the dressing room, is called "The Fixer Blues" and references Etheridge's previous two marriages as she tells the story of what happened after she spoke out this week.
"Seems I said some things about an old, old, old friend that got some people talking," she sang. "Well, I know broken hearts, a thing or two about divorce, I've been there before once, OK twice. And I have not seen my friend in over 10 years and I swear I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever met his wife."
After insisting she's not trying to say who's wrong or who's right, she addressed Smith herself: "Fixer, I hope you understand to scandalize was never my plan."
Then Etheridge concluded, "So the moral of this story is divorce is a bitch and nobody wins. Let's not do unto others and please forgive us our sins, life is too hard anyway. So when you chatting with Andy, you better watch what you say."

Melissa Etheridge Says Angelina Jolie's Camp Contacted Her After She Spoke Out on Brad Pitt's Divorce

On Monday, Melissa Etheridge spoke with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM radio show, where she opened up about Brad Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie. On Wednesday's Watch What Happens Live, the 55-year-old singer sat down with Cohen once again, and revealed that she had been contacted by Jolie's team regarding her earlier comments.
"There are people whose business it is, whose job it is, to kind of fix things for celebrities," Etheridge told Cohen and fellow guest Kelly Clarkson.
Etheridge, who had been friends with Pitt before his marriage to Jolie, told Cohen in her earlier interview that she thought many of the claims against the 52-year-old actor were "completely unfounded" and "heartbreaking."
She also went on to say that many people who knew Pitt "lost a friend" when he struck up his relationship with Jolie, and said that the way Pitt's name and reputation were being tarnished during the ongoing divorce was particularly upsetting.
"It breaks my heart that anyone would take something as personal as your marriage and your relationship and your rights to your children and do it as purposefully as I see it’s being done,” the singer said on Monday.
Etheridge implied that it was these comments, among others, that the actress' camp had an issue with.
"Every time I say something it gets turned around and twisted," she shared with Cohen and Clarkson on WWHL. "And all of a sudden I’m saying something about [Jolie]."
So, to avoid any more misunderstandings, Etheridge turned to music. "I thought I would do what I do best and I wrote a song about it today."
The song, titled "The Fixer Blues," serves as a way to emphasis the points she made in her earlier interviews (with lyrics like "I have not seen my friend in over 10...years and I swear I have never, ever, ever, ever met his wife..."), while at the same time defending her right to free speech ("my opinion is mine and you can take that").
Etheridge's song also contained lyrics that not-too-subtly poked fun at the news that Jolie had hired crisis manager and "fixer" Judy Smith, who is the real-life inspiration for Kerry Washington's Olivia Pope on the ABC drama Scandal ("I hope you understand, to scandalize was never my plan.")
In the end, Ethridge had one sound piece of advice for anyone talking about the high-profile divorce in the future: "When you're chattin' with Andy, you better watch what you say."

Melissa Etheridge Slams Angelina Jolie and Defends Brad Pitt Against ‘Completely Unfounded’ Child Abuse Allegations

Well, there’s no mistaking which team Melissa Etheridge is on! The singer didn’t mince her words when she opened up about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s bitter divorce battle in an interview on Monday, October 3.
Speaking to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM radio show, the 55-year-old musician said she was “heartbroken” for Pitt and called the accusations that he verbally and physically assaulted his kids “completely unfounded.”
“It breaks my heart that anyone would take something as personal as your marriage and your relationship and your rights to your children and do it as purposefully as I see it’s being done,” said Etheridge, who is a longtime friend of Pitt’s and sang at his wedding to Jennifer Aniston.
The veteran rocker — who has been through her own ugly custody battle with her ex Tammy Lynn Michaels in 2010 — slammed Jolie, 41, and her legal team for the way they’re dealing with the negative news surrounding the divorce.
“I’ve gone through family courts. I've been twice around this block, and I know it really well, and I know when there's some forethought to just how mean and just how you're going to put disinformation out there first.”
Etheridge told the host it’s “completely heartbreaking” to see her friend at the center of child abuse accusations, and said she’d love to reconnect with the 52-year-old during this difficult time.
“I really hope that he reaches back out,” she said, before revealing she lost touch with him after he got together with Jolie. “There are a lot of us who haven’t seen him in 10 years.”
She added: “We all lost a friend.”
Etheridge took yet another swipe at the Girl, Interrupted actress accusing her of “nasty” behavior when she struck up a relationship with Billy Bob Thornton, who was engaged to Laura Dern at the time.
“I was around when Angelina was not doing nice things with Billy Bob to Laura Dern. I went through that on a personal level, and then to know the side of Jennifer and Brad…” she trailed off. “I helped Laura move out of her house with Billy Bob — I like broke into their home to get their stuff out because it was so nasty.”

Brad Pitt Reportedly Offered to Sire This Grammy-Winning Singer’s Child

Say Brad Pitt offered to provide a sample of his genetically perfect DNA for your offspring. You would certainly blurt/shriek “YES” before he even finished the formal offer, for fear he might think better of such a gesture. Who cares whether or not you are in a committed relationship with someone offering his own DNA—you will have hours to work out these issues in the car while driving Brad Jr. to and from his lucrative child modeling gigs, right?
Well, maybe not everyone would be so quick to snap up Pitt’s sperm sample. Take, for example, this Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who recently admitted that the actor offered to sire her child some two decades ago.
That singer-songwriter? Melissa Etheridge. In the late 90s—1997 and 1998, to be exact—Etheridge’s then-partner Julie Cypher gave birth to two children whose biological father was later revealed to beDavid Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash. But in a recent Australian interview with Studio 10’s Angela Bishop, Etheridge confessed that Brad Pitt also offered to be the biological parent to her offspring.
“Well actually, [Brad Pitt] was such a good friend of mine. And we did consider it,” Etheridge said. The reason she and Cypher ultimately decided against it, however?
“I looked and I saw how badly he wanted children and I thought, ‘I don’t want to share this with someone who really, badly wants children because my children don’t need another parent—they have two.’”
Etheridge has shared this information with her children, who, as you can imagine, are devastated by the missed genetic opportunity.
“Of course, my teenagers now are like, ‘I could have had Brad Pitt [as my dad]!” My son said, ‘I could’ve been amazingly handsome!’”
But Crosby was the better choice, Etheridge explained, because he already had kids.
“It’s one of the reasons why David Crosby and his wife are so perfect—because they [already] had children. They were looking to do this as a gift. And my children are lovely and gorgeous anyway.”
While it is uncertain how Etheridge and Pitt first met, the singer performed at his 2000 wedding to Jennifer Aniston. Etheridge admitted several years back that she had not spoken to the actor since he married Angelina Jolie. “But we were very close before that,” she said, adding, “I have reached out.”
