CANNES: BRAD PITT IS MENACINGLY GOOD IN THE SCUZZY, SNAZZY UNDERWORLD MOVIE 'KILLING THEM SOFTLY'
by Owen Gleiberman
Posted May 22 2012
I wasn’t nearly as wild as a lot of critics about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – I thought it was too long, too arty and slow, too in love with its moods and images. Yet it was clear that the director, the New Zealand-born Australian Andrew Dominik, was very gifted. Whenever Brad Pitt appeared as Jesse James, the screen vibrated with menace, even though Pitt seemed to be doing almost nothing. As good as he had been before (in, say, Fight Club), I thought that the Jesse James performance was the place where Pitt took the full leap to who he is today – a top-of-his-game Hollywood actor who infuses star aura with complexity. In Killing Them Softly, Dominik’s first feature since The Assassination of Jesse James, Pitt once again plays a quietly powerful sociopath, and once again the screen vibrates. The thing about Pitt’s charismatic badasses – and this is what a lot of haters still miss about him as an actor – is that although they radiate a certain brawny physical fearlessness, they draw their strength from Pitt’s intelligence, his quicksilver-cool line readings and aura of awareness.
In Killing Them Softly, he plays Jackie Cogan, a Mob enforcer who’s called in to clean up the mess that follows an underworld card-game robbery committed by two real bottom feeders: Frankie (Scoot McNairy), who’s just desperate and manic enough to know that he’s in over his head, and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn, from Animal Kingdom), a sweaty, disheveled British junkie who can’t see past his next fix. The two look like they should be easy enough to deal with, but first Jackie has to figure out whether Trattman (Ray Liotta), who runs the poker night, masterminded the heist of his own game (he had done that once before). Then he’s got to smoke out anyone else involved.
On paper, there’s not much to the plot, which is taken from the 1974 novel Cogan’s Game by Boston crime writer George V. Higgins (The Friends of Eddie Coyle). But that’s because Dominik wants the encounters to stand out from the story. He wants the drama to be in how these petty lowlifes interact with each other – the chiseling, ball-busting, back-and-forth scuzziness, the comedy of casually obscene aggression that’s always dancing on the edge of violence. This, of course, is Scorsese Land, Tarantino Land, and also David Chase Land, and because those three have, in different ways, mined this kind of criminal material so brilliantly, you’ve now got to be damn good to enter the authentically bloody and intense movie-underworld arena and really play that game.
Dominik is up to the challenge. Killing Them Softly is mostly a loosely frazzled series of dialogues, held in bars, cars, and apartment lairs, and a lot of them are mesmerizing. Dominik plugs us into the moment, so that we’re hanging on every word to figure out who’s stupid but maybe street smart, and who’s under whose thumb. The fact that so little is really at stake is a part of the tasty gutter flavor. So is the relentlessness of the violence (Ray Liotta gets the holy living crap beat out of him in a scene that, for me, was more intense, and more true, than anything in Drive). Killing Them Softly was shot, in a palette of vivid grunge, in what appears to be the most anonymous locations in every dirty armpit of Boston, and the characters, too, are walking armpits. They don’t rise to the level of being goodfellas – they’re worsefellas.
One of the worst, and most captivating, is James Gandolfini as Mickey, an old hitman crony of Jackie’s who gets called up from Florida to do one of the jobs. Gandolfini trots out his familiar Tony Soprano inflections, yet this Mob lug has an even shorter fuse than Tony, and Gandolfini makes him a different animal, a drunk and a rabid bully who abuses harmless waiters and hookers yet weeps if his wife waves divorce papers at him. When he and Jackie are sitting around, chewing over their lives, revealing everything and nothing, the movie takes wing. It’s the poetry of men who have no poetry – who exist from one threat to the next.
Killing Them Softly is less successful when it tries to be a tale of capitalism’s decline. Dominik has set the film at the end of George W. Bush’s second term, when the economy was falling apart. He keeps looping in TV clips of Bush, and of Obama riding into the home stretch of the presidential campaign in full “hope and change” mode. The implication is that the entire system is rigged, and that the cutthroats we’re watching are acting out the greedy, rotten desperation of the whole society. But that’s an awfully grand – and trendy – indictment to balance on the backs of thieves and murderers who can barely see what’s in front of them. (The movie also says that the Mob behaves just like a corporation, a point that was made 40 years ago by The Godfather.) Killing Them Softly is a blistering, at times hypnotic minor movie that wraps itself in an importance it never earns. But there’s no doubt that it has made me an Andrew Dominik believer.

Is Tabloid Gossip Hurting Brad Pitt’s ‘Allied’ at the Box Office?
Owen Gleiberman
Chief Film Critic
DECEMBER 1, 2016
People have always craved gossip about movie stars. In the age of Hedda Hopper and Photoplay, the gossip was generally orchestrated (and often just made up) by the studios, as a way to control the stars’ images
Today, in the age of TMZ and InTouch, the power of gossip has shifted. In one way, stars now manage and manipulate their own images. In another way, they’ve lost all control, as they fight to live inside a digital-media fishbowl of scandals and paparazzi images that ricochet around the planet.
For fans, the tidal wave of gossip — some accurate, much of it fake — has swelled exponentially; so has the anything-goes voyeuristic luridness of it all. Yet something else has expanded as well: the sense that the off-screen stories we’re reading about — “Ben and Jen, still together!” “Mila’s baby bump!” — are no longer just an extension of the stars’ images. Those stories have become a kind of real-life movie, one that’s frequently more addictive than the movies themselves. (Quick, which movie would you rather see: “Batman v Superman,” or “Jen Is Pregnant Again, and Ben Swears He’ll Quit Drinking and Gambling?”) The tale in the tabloids is now threatening to become the tail that wags the movie-star dog.
Over Thanksgiving weekend, Brad Pitt had a major new film come out — “Allied,” a WWII romantic espionage thriller in which he stars with Marion Cotillard. Is there still a big audience for a movie so knowingly old-fashioned that its first half is set in Casablanca? Thus far, the box-office grosses for “Allied” have been … OK.
That aside, here’s another movie we can all agree is a smash hit: “The Breakup of Brangelina.” Have you seen it yet? It has everything! A great love story — between the two sexiest people in the world — that turned into a messy divorce; rumors of adultery, substance abuse, eating disorders, and a mental breakdown; and a custody fight! The riveting climax hinged on an accusation of abusive behavior, which the courts determined to be groundless. (Quick, would you rather see this movie, or “Allied”?) For a while, “The Breakup of Brangelina” was even playing on a double feature with something called “Brad and Marion: What Really Happened on That Set?” That one may have been entirely made-up, but if we’ve learned anything from the presidential campaign, it’s that we’re now living in a media looking glass where things that aren’t true take on the ring of reality, even after they’ve been debunked.
Will the tabloid stories that have swirled around Pitt for the last six months influence whether or not audiences go to see “Allied”? The rumors of an on-set liaison, however spurious, might actually be an audience lure, in that Liz-and-Dick-on-the-set-of-“Cleopatra” way. But the more vital issue is that Pitt, who often shuns love stories, is now attempting to market himself as a romantic star. Is the audience of women who will seek him out in that kind of role going to be as big, right now, as it would have been a year ago, before the coverage of his divorce splattered him with mud?
My unscientific answer is: maybe not. Then again, however much the success of “Allied” is influenced by the perception of that other, gossip-driven Brad Pitt movie, the real question is this: For those who buy a ticket to “Allied,” will their awareness of tabloid scandal influence how they view Pitt as a fantasy figure? Movies, after all, are illusions that convince us, in a spectacular and nearly counterintuitive way, that they’re real. We don’t just want to be swept away — we want to believe.
Pitt is a superb actor (one of my favorites, in fact), but the question for audiences is whether they can completely give themselves over to experiencing him in a role that is now competing with the role of his life.

Brad Pitt wins Emmy and Oscar as top film producer of the year
Chris Beachum
Aug 25, 2014 6:43 pm
Brad Pitt has now been proclaimed the top film producer for both television and film this year. He won Monday night at the Emmys as executive producer of Best TV Movie “The Normal Heart.” He took home the Best Picture trophy at the Oscars in March for “12 Years a Slave.”
These are his first victories at both of these awards shows. It was his second career nomination at the Emmys, with the first in 2002 as a guest actor on “Friends.” At the Academy Awards, he has lost all three acting bids (“Twelve Monkeys,” 1995; “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” 2008; “Moneyball,” 2011) and one for Best Picture (“Moneyball,” 2011).
HBO’s “The Normal Heart” is an adaptation of Larry Kramer‘s play about the beginnings of the AIDS crisis in New York during the 1980s. In the Best TV Movie category, it defeated “Killing Kennedy,” “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight,” “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” and “The Trip to Bountiful.”
The film “12 Years a Slave” was adapted from a true-life book by former slave Solomon Northup in the 19th century. At the Oscars, it defeated “American Hustle,” “Captain Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Gravity,” “Her,” “Nebraska,” “Philomena,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
In a very short period of time, Pitt has accomplished half of the coveted EGOT status with his Emmy and Oscar wins. So far in his caeer, he has received no Grammy or Tony Awards nominations.

COMMENTS
I was blown away by #Allied. Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard were just stunning. Haven't cried that hard in a movie in years. Brilliant film!
These remarkable actors are incredibly inspiring to me
We all cried. #Allied
#Allied fucking broke my heart
Everytime I c the trailer for "Allied" and Brad Pitt asks (in his amazing sexy voice),"is this real, do u love me"?, I scream at the tv, YES
Just watched #Allied #movie
You'll cry at the end
I know Brad Pitt isn't actually aging backward but it sure doesn't seem like he's aging forward #Allied
Saw #allied movie last night. Strong performances from Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard. Strong visually and clever storyline. Enjoyed it.
Saw #Allied last night, great film, really great acting too surprise surprise! Very tense too! @cineworld
this film, excellent
The best movie I've seen in a long time!
A superb movie!
An amazing love story
Allied has become my favorite movie! The story was compelling; the characters were complex; and the acting was top-notch. This movie deserves the Oscar.
Excellent, but sad
Beautiful!
Loved this..does Brad Pitt age?!!
Great movie . We really enjoyed
This was the best movie of the year. The acting was superb .
I cannot say I feel sorry for Brad because the warning signs were all there in the beginning. He just failed to see them I am starting to think Angie is a witch and may have put a spell on the poor guy. It wouldn't surpirse me I always thought she was crazy and out there. Just be thankful you escaped alive Brad.
What a nasty b*#ch she is
Another case of 'I'm in charge and don't you know it even if it ruins the kids lives' from Jolie....the more I see the less I like of her
I pity these kids. They used to be the envy of the world, now they are the pity of the world with a mother like Angelina. The kids won't turn out good. Just wait to see their pubic meltdown in a few years. Sad.
I don't know nothing about this story, but it seems to me as Brad is a victim of a very insecure and unbalanced ex wife.
ALLIED is GREAT! It's great! I really loved it! Pitt is terrific. Zemeckis top form.
If you haven't watched "Allied" starring #Bradpitt & #MarionCotillard , please go do so! I can't describe how amazing it is
I’ll judge the movie and the actors as I always have done – by how they appear on screen.
Such a great film :)
Went to see #Allied at the weekend..... great film 🎥 Loved it
I saw 'Allied' tonight and I loved it. No idea why it's getting such a beating in the press? The end is gutting
Mr Bradshaw: Thank you once more for elaborately summarising the plot of the film instead of reviewing it. You seem to completely misunderstand your job as a film reviewer, which should be to give an opinion and feel of a film, so that people who read the review have an idea of whether they might like to watch it. What you do is summarise the plot in such detail that it can't help but at least partially spoil the film for someone who subsequently sees it. For someone who presumably loves and appreciates films, that you don't realise this is an utterly shit thing to do (consistently!) is appalling.
Brad Pitt. His Mom taught him 2 work hard, b nice 2 old folk, look smart etc. If only she hadn't 4gotten the bit about not marrying NUTBAGS
Robert certainly succeeded in his goal of wanting to move the audience emotionally👌🏾An excellent romantic thriller!
So letting her kids watch her kill herself with an eating disorder that she refuses to acknowledge or get treated isn't CHILD ABUSE then?!!!
Crazy
Your face mask fell off.
Cue: "Angelina Jolie rushed to hospital in terrifying health scare!!" just in time for Christmas headlines then.
"Unable to eat - fears CANCER has returned" (despite the fact that she never had cancer in the first place).
Right on cue. It's old Angie. You've been threatening to kill yourself for 25 years now. You're as bad at that as everything else.
Code for: The batshit crazy Ho is losing it big time.
She's mid psychotic breakdown. Has to be.
The longest I am going to kill my self news in history
I would have no problem with seeing her being like this...except...if this were the case then how is she not being investigated by DCFS herself? Even without the above horror scenario, it has to be obvious that she is seriously disturbed. I don't get how they've just walked away and left her to it???? Or maybe they haven't and the ARE keeping an eye on her, hence her freaking out now? It is a possibility.
She's nothing but a tabloid ho, a walking circus
And to our amusement and expectations, she turned her divorce into another camp event.
Even if it seems that she got spanked hard behind the scenes, certainly enough to scare the shitt out of her and make her behave and obey Pitt NOW, She did give us the usual Pre-Christmas gift that we have been receiving each year for the last several years at her expense and at which Pitt never helped her recover from. He gets to remain coldly aloof from her as always while she was the one throwing another bomb and thrashing around while Pitt cracked his whip and she whimpered her insane rampage into another silence. :rotflmao: :whip: :boohoo: I think the show is over and Jolie is finished and will forevermore be remembered as the insane camp event, the rampaging vindictive soon to be ex-wife showing her crazy and Pitt will probably escape because Jolie permitted it, the doormat until the very end. :skipping: There will be no more of this :fight: ...... Maybe next year another gift? :)
bump for the crazed woman dragging her kids through a nasty divorce and releasing false information to media outlets.
Angelina is building Brad's case against her very successfully and he is smart enough to let her do it.
As Napoleon said, "never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake". This is a great strategy.
He doesn't need to do much. She is doing it all by herself.
And how deliciously satisfying is it?
I think "she's her own worst enemy" is perhaps a better way to put it. At this point, I'm pretty sure Pitt isn't thinking of her as an "asset" in any way, shape or form.
She is still trying to play the victim. No one is believing her.
Since when do children put in requests on who will be invited to holiday dinners? This is just another lie that Jolie is making up as she goes along. She is now trying to twist public perception into being that it's the kids who don't want to see Pitt and fool the world that it's not her fault. She's trying to clear herself of the parental alienation that she has been called out on, and at the same time not back down about getting her own way regarding full custody. She is doing anything she can to "win" this divorce. She is like a manipulative 41 year-old child. Daddy cannot spoil her by buying her a verdict, it's too public of a battle and he can't do it without exposing himself. When the reality of the judge being more powerful than her and that Pitt is her legal equal finally kicks her in the teeth. I hope that the meltdown is very public and very explosive so all the world can see the tantrum throwing spoiled brat Angie J. Voight truly is.- V1 nsi
She is spiteful for releasing a statement like that to the media (via her "source"). It clearly implies the kids don't give two shlts about their father. I don't believe it. More likely, they didn't bring up his name so as not to upset Lefsetz and have it go off!
she is extremely vindictive and has no clue how to act in the best interest of her children.
So this is the new narrative for Jolieloons or her PR: to drag down Brad and claim that he is evil too. Doesn't work, we all know who is the real dirty one of the duo.
I loved it. It definitely wasn't an action, or special effects film. .
I liked it, it's old-fashioned story driven, and excellent acting.
Lol, hey.. call me old fashioned'..☆👍
It is the best film this year, so yes, I'd have to agree. I loved it.
It didn't effect me. I watched and love it.
Those who chose not to see it's their loss....this is a wonderful film.
.@AlliedMovie is excellent. Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are outstanding. Go see it. #AlliedMovie #Allied
News Flash! She's a bitch!
#CinemaForOne #Allied. I LOVED it!! Was excited to see it anyway and was not disappointed. And Brad Pitt is so hot throughout. So. Hot. 😍
As a father I can respect Brad Pitt disciplining his children if need be, never abuse; I would never want my children to fear me but to respect me. Shame on Angelina Jolie for the way she so publicly flaunts & exposes what is a family affair into a way to catch her ex in a public snare, despite her fame & fortune; she's always been low class.
No I heard they broke up because he ate the last sandwich and she was so hungry she lost Her mind with a few pounds. Lol
I always felt that Brad was too sane for her.He is a good man,and she needs to stop trying to make it look like he abused those kids.
Maybe if her dad would of disciplined her back then she wldnt think making out with her brother was ok, dnt get me started on blood vials.
I totally lost interest in her ever since l she treated brad badly. She is so unpredicted. Like sleeping with enemy.
I see she's still trying to make herself look like the perfect parent, get over yourself, wonder who the next victim will be? Ladies lock your husbands up bc she's on the loose
Something is wrong with this chick, she is showing her true mess up colors, Brad this is what you get when you think grass is greener on the other side, you get a cookie monster.
She's nuts. Always has been. Too bad Brad fell for her and got caught up in her wrath. He'll fight for his kids. And deservedly so. They're not just YOUR children Angelina.
I think she has effectively screwed her career! Use to think she was an awesome strong woman and took her work as an ambassador seriously! Now she's just another unstable Hollywood moron!
Honestly this woman seems so pretentious. She acts as if she can't ever make a mistake as a parent and that's Freakin annoying
Oh she's such a sicko, when she married Billy Bob Thornton, she would wear a necklace with his blood inside a vial around her neck lol she's weird, and something about her taking razorblades and slicing her fingers so she could get the blood in there lol, and she's making a speech on Crimes against Children, yeah ok
I think she should shut it already. Who is she deceiving now huh? I just feel for Brad who got messed up in all this her stupid drama and the kids.
I think she's ruined her effectiveness as a spokesperson. Whenever I look at her now all I see is a woman that came between a good dad and his kids after she ruined his marriage, not someone trying to protect kids.
Oh geez. I'm not sure I will ever look at her the same way again. I call BS on her claims of alleged abuse from BP against one of their kids. SHE is the one with the history of unstable behavior. I just feel sorry for their kids because they are the ones that will suffer in the long run.
Jolie is trying too hard to smear Pitt in a subtle way. She is guilty, a master manipulator, and wicked. Pitt should get sole custody of the kids and Jolie should get supervised visits.
This women is a spoiled little nut case that hides behind charity, & causes. I mean look at her eyes, whole lotta crazy going on there.
Did she use Brad to bring attention to one of her causes? You have to ask yourself what kind of Mother keeps her kids from a good father? There were no findings from his investigation which means she notified the authorities over nothing other than to smear him in public. I hope he ends up with full custody, what she did was wrong.
I really used to like her but after all this I cannot stand her anymore
Starting to wonder if Brad was the one being abused. Imagine what she was saying to him in private.
She's just ruining her own career and reputation the more she spotlights herself in this situation.
She can try to make Brad look bad all she wants, but everyone now sees her true colors.
I use to like her, now she seems like that nasty hag that's always bitching.
Of course it is. She'll do everything she can to try and make sure she looks perfect. I can't stand her.
Of course it is! She's a nut job and Brad has been proven that he has NOT hurt any of his children!
What a horrible woman. I use to like her, even though she committed adultery...now she's just a pathetic loser!
That bit right there lost you all credibility for that review. Try reviewing a film on its merits, without getting personal.
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are brilliant in #Allied. I think a lot of you will dig it. I sure did
Can we all acknowledge how much of a blessing Brad Pitt is to this world x
"Allies" is a great film, but with such precision and skill have made that deserves to be seen. "
.Now that the film, most critics have described it as a classic war romance that although not perfect, but it should not be underestimated
Just been to see it tonight, great movie, one of my movies of the year if not the movie of the year and I go to see at least one a week, some times 2. Can't figure out why this guy is a movie critic. Pretty busy 5.45 showing, always a good sign that word of mouth has got about.
Everyone seems to be hard to please these days. I really enjoyed this movie. The tension was sustained throughout. Talk about a sad ending which is unusual for a Hollywood movie.
Ocean's Eleven was the best showcase of Brad Pitt as movie star. He could do quirky things and still look like a star, even among stars.
Movie so good I even stole Brad Pitt's haircut
(fury)
Is it just me, or is this headline completely misleading? This isn't a review of Allied, such some rambling musings on movies about WWII, and to call it fluff would be radically overstating its import. (Allied: history repeats itself in Brad Pitt’s second world war thriller)
As usual crappy review by someone with more self opinion than objective criticism.
How does one become a 'film critic'?
I loved this movie. You and Brad were a force. I cried at the end. Marianne was my favorite character.
This film is fabulous. Can't get it out of my head. Besides being a wonderful romance, both you and Brad Pitt were outstanding. The best film of 2016
Excellent movie! I'll rate it 4 star's!!!! Why did she have to die like that?????? I was hoping that she was not the Link???? Brad did a phenomenal job.... That Sex part N the car was intense!!!! Anna was just the cutest baby ever!!!!! Please go support, support, support I promise you won't be disappointed
Just saw it last night. Such a great movie! Well done 💯💯. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time
Sooooo goooood!!! Best movie I've seen in a long time!! The tears tho 😭
Allied w/ Brad Pitt was hella dope 10/10 recommend
Thoroughly enjoyed Allied with Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt.
Loved #Allied easily one of my favourite films. Gripped the whole way through, the tension is just immense.
Years and years ago, I thought Brad Pitt was just another pretty boy actor that would never amount to anything until the day his looks failed him and people noticed his lack of actng ability ... Then I saw Twelve Monkeys, and then Fight Club, followed by all the other movies where he steals every scene, even in the smallest of cameos and I just knew I was watching one of the best actors of his generation.
Stuff the celebrity, praise the actor and may he continue making a similar wide spectrum of movies for years to come.
Great article. I am his huge fan and think his work is getting better and better, although Fight club, Snatch stand out from earlier days. The assasisation of JJ was brilliant. Wish him all happiness.
Great article- The Assassination of JJBTCRF was one of the best movies EVER, IMO, so really looking forward seeing Killing Them Softly. Brad may be overlooked/underrated by those Hwood award types, but we film fans know we will get a treat when we see his movies- he does great work and picks interesting projects. If you listen to Brad's actual interviews (pay no attention to the lying tabloids), he's really concerned with leaving a legacy for his kids and wants Angie to be proud of him (sweet!), so there should be more film treats to come.

Today @NonPareil99 & I enjoyed 🎞🎬 #Allied 👍
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ story and acting
#Allied was...so fucking good!!!! Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard were amazing!! One of my new favourite movies 😻
Perfectly paced and performed, #Allied is an innovative addition to WWII filmography. A must-see for everyone and my 2016 #1. #JamesyOnFilm
She needs those kids for her image, for photo ops,.....
They are her meal ticket.
Wow, you always go to movies based on critics opinion? Then you miss a lot if good movies.
Kinda lost respect for her, they did sign a confidential agreements yet her ppl are doing all the talking.
I find it odd that she is always breaking up with men over that one adopted son. He must be bad luck or something
She is such a control freak crazy person. She always has been and this is just more of it. Those poor kids....
She pretends to be mother Theresa , what a hypocrite Angelina! So painfully jealous it has made the real Angelina show her colors lol
Of course it is. She'll now advocate about all this to keep her story going. Making something worse than it really is.
This woman is clearly psycho !! She didn't want Brad to discipline the children under any circumstances !!!
She is wacked.. always thought so... kissing her brother and blood around her neck.. should have hit and quit it Brad
Who cares about this weird woman...who swallows men then spit them out.....
I can't stand her.
She goes off and helps the unfortunate kids abroad. (That's OK).
But, why can't she help the American kids?''
She's really getting on my nerves
That dumb woman needs a Psych evaluation
it's just one of those Angelina bipolar times
Think Angie is a bipolar.. Hard to Handle this kind of people no matter how u show ur love to them
I think the kid's would be safer with Brad than Angelina.
not for our group who just saw it. Great movie bring Kleenex.
#Allied was one of the best movies ever if you have the chance, watch it
Went to go see #alliedmovie yesterday and I must say Brad Pitt gave an amazing performance and it was beautifully directed
Just watched the movie "Allied". Brad Pitt is... on point.
It is worth mentioning that the film's allied brad Pitt came masterpiece.
It's sad. I like her but I feel what she is doing is ultimately wrong and damaging to her children. Maybe the hormone changes post mastectomy has made her a bit off balance. Hopefully she starts realizing that seeing both parents is what is in the children's best interest.
If this is true, it's more of her anti-family actions for the family court judge to consider.

How to Cope With Being Blamed For Something You Didn't Do
Updated on October 8, 2016
Audrey Hunt
"It's Not My Fault." -- Being the Victim of a Narcissistic Personality
Most blamers see nothing wrong in blaming others for anything and everything. When things go wrong in their own lives, someone else is always to blame -- nothing is ever their fault. They tend to be irrational; therefore you can't reason with them. Don't even try.
It's best to avoid this type of personality (narcissistic), as this disorder includes being negative, which can have a destructive affect on you.
Unfortunately, I have a family member who fits this type of personality. It has taken me a lifetime to recognize that she lives with a mental disorder. I became a victim by buying in to her belief system. I accepted criticism and verbal abuse. I felt sorry for her because she had a rough childhood. I found myself walking on eggshells with every conversation.
Don't become a victim of a negative personality. It can literally ruin your life, especially if you and your accuser are related or are close friends.
You may even be better off by choosing to disassociate (and thereby severing) the toxic relationship. If you find that you just can't do this, at least set up specific boundaries to protect yourself.
The Truth Will Set You Free
At one time or another, most of us are blamed for something we didn't do. It feels unjust and unfair. And, it is. Even though we may be completely guiltless, we feel guilty.
Here's what you'll hopefully learn about in this article:
The Accusation is a Reflection of Your Accuser, Not You
I've learned that anyone who accuses us of improper behavior and lies isn't really worth worrying about. Your accuser has personal issues that have absolutely nothing to do with you. At the time you are being blamed, knowing this may not help much. Even so, it is true.
Often, jealousy, insecurity, and low self-esteem are coursing through a liar's veins. The only way they can feel their own importance is to gossip viciously about other people, bringing them down so that they themselves can feel better about who they are.
To intentionally accuse someone of doing something they know is a lie gives the liar a feeling of importance. Feel sorry for them, my friend. They are miserable individuals and cannot find joy within. They are unable to feel good themselves so they continue this endless road of slum and slime as they pass judgement and make up lies about other people.
You Don't Need to Prove Your Innocence
You do not need to prove your innocence to anyone if you are indeed innocent. You already know in your heart that you have clean hands. This is all that matters. It is not necessary to prove to anyone that you are not guilty. Do not fuel the evil fire by giving these lies power.
The Bible tells us to "Pray for those that despitefully use you." Whether you believe in the Holy Book or not, the advice is good. Only by feeling love for our enemies (anyone who is against us) can we be free. So try to forgive and that includes forgetting.
Is this easy? No, it isn't. In fact, it's hard...very hard. But if you can grow to this level it will help you to feel peace as you struggle through a difficult time. Have patience, both with yourself and your accuser. The truth will eventually be known, and it is truth that will set you free.
Learning New Strategies for Dealing With Blamers
Help is on the way. You're going to feel relieved as you learn how to deal and cope with destructive behavior. No longer will you have to be a victim of blame and negativity.
When I finally learned that I had been manipulated to believe that something was wrong with me I felt empowered with a sense of freedom. Though it wasn't easy to give up the close relationship between my sibling and me, it has been the best choice I ever made.
Armour yourself with knowledge. Like a bullet-proof vest, the toxic blame will bounce right off of you. The more aware you are, the better. You will avoid these types of relationships and save your self-esteem.
7 Key Signs of a Blamer
The following list will help you identify the signs and behaviors of a blamer:
Beware of people who automatically assume the fault is yours. After all, it could never be their fault. By the way, these people also love to play mind games. They rehearse their entire dialogue so they will be prepared for your next conversation. It's a full time job for them.
A Blamer Has A Quick Temper
Narcissistic Behavior: "It's All About Me"
One way to spot a blamer is by narcissistic behavior. If the person demonstrates signs of NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), blaming others for personal problems in life feels normal to them.
Learning all we can about narcissism is beneficial in two ways.
Extreme selfishness is a red flag for identifying narcissism. While most of us tend to be a little on the selfish side, those with NPD carry it to a whole different extreme.
A reminder: "The greatest prize for life's labors isn't in material possessions or impressive accomplishments, but in the progress of personal character. You labor for your own becoming, this is your richest reward. Who you become is your greatest possession, make it your masterpiece! " -- Matt Moody phD, Social Psychologist.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder Criteria
To give you more ammunition for how to cope with being blamed for something you didn't do, listed below are criteria for NPD.
Is That Person Lying to You? Check Their Body Language
If you want to know whether someone is lying to you, check their body language. While there may be exceptions to the following tips, these are used by police and investigators:
Note: Some of the behaviors listed above can also be demonstrated by someone who might not be lying at all. People who are nervous, shy, easily frightened, or guilt-ridden for another reason, can have these same reactions.
In Conclusion
If we live in such a way that we exemplify complete honesty, we develop integrity. This is the best way to ward off being blamed or accused in the first place. Honesty begins in childhood. Children learn best by example. Teach your children and your grandchildren the value of always being truthful.
The title for this Hub was inspired by a post in the HubPages forum on the same subject. Remembering a time when I once took the blame for something I didn't do (it was traumatic for me), I decided to share my thoughts and write a Hub about how to deal with this problem. I hope you've found it helpful.

- Pessimism. Pessimism is one of the sure signs of a blamer. No matter how positive you are, they will always find something bad to happen. There's often no talking them out of their negative thinking.
- Making excuses. Blamers are always making excuses for their own actions. They are very good at this.
- Passing the blame. Blamers will tend to always pass the blame on to someone else, while never taking responsibility for their actions.
- Quick temperament. Being quick-tempered can be another sign to watch for. Blamers are known to have short fuses.
- Takes credit. A blamer always insists on credit for being right. Oh, how they love to shout, "I told you so!"
- Betrayal. Being trust-worthy is not part of a blamer's character. They are typically back-stabbers. So, be very careful. If you don't want something you say to be repeated, then don't say it.
- Envy. Envy is the blamer's middle name. Any time you get something nice, they become angry and envious. This includes any success you might have. When you're sick or in pain, believe me -- they're happy. They may not realize this and in fact will deny it. Then, when you feel great and positive again, they may immediately remind you that "soon, bad things will happen, so don't get too comfortable."
- It provides us with an understanding of the behavior itself. In turn, we are better prepared to cope and deal with the effects of this disorder.
- We may even recognize some signs of narcissism in our own personalities and take steps to correct it. With awareness and desire, combined with some hard work, this disorder can be overcome. Seek the help of a qualified doctor.
- A grandiose sense of self importance, exaggerating talents and achievements. Look for a feeling of superiority.
- Hungers for excessive admiration and attention.
- Has a sense of entitlement.
- Displays arrogant behavior.
- Really believes that others are jealous of them .
- Lacks empathy for others.
- Takes advantage of others to further self.
- Is preoccupied with fantasies of power, love, or beauty.
- Harbors feelings of jealousy
Is That Person Lying to You? Check Their Body Language
If you want to know whether someone is lying to you, check their body language. While there may be exceptions to the following tips, these are used by police and investigators:
- Check the eyes. If the person avoids eye contact, that's a clue that he or she may be lying.
- Watch the gestures and expression. If the gestures and expression don't match the verbal dialogue, that's another sign. Example: "I like you," while frowning.
- A guilty person will get defensive.
- Using humor or sarcasm is another sign of lying.
- Touching the nose often can be a sign of lying.
- Covering the mouth indicates deceit.
- Be aware of eye movement. The eyes move to the left during a lie.
- Watch out for body movement. When a person tells the truth they tend to lean forward. When they tell a lie they tend to lean backward.
- Watch hand, arm, and leg movements. When lying, these body movements are stiff and restricted.
- Pay attention to too many details given. Liars tend to go on and on to get you to believe them.
