The first rule of fighting a rumor: Punch it in the face.
Brad Pitt did just that at Monday night’s London premiere of “Allied,” where he shared the red carpet with co-star Marion Cotillard despite months-old rumors that she had played a role in the “Fight Club” star's split from Angelina Jolie.
According to our insider, organizers were nervous about pairing Pitt and Cotillard on the carpet before the notoriously aggressive British paparazzi and celebrity reporters.
“They were afraid it would reignite all the rumors, knowing how the British tabloids are,” according to our spy.
Under orders from organizers, Cotillard strode the red carpet first — but then Pitt rushed to her side.
“When Brad found out, he overruled his overprotective P.R. people and went to greet Marion,” we’re told.
One day earlier at the French premiere for the World War II flick, Pitt and Cotillard appeared together, which hadn’t been the case in past promotional events for the flick.
“He apparently feels he did nothing wrong and probably figured it would look worse if they avoided each other,” according to our source.
That insider says Pitt broke the ice by walking over to Cotillard and greeting her with a “kind of weird” high-five.
“You could tell it wasn't rehearsed,” the source said, adding that the actors then stood together, smiling and posing for photos.
“They whispered something to each other, but no one else could hear what it was,” we're told.
When news broke in mid-September that Pitt and Jolie were ending their two-year marriage, Cotillard took to Instagram to dispel rumors that she had anything to do with it — despite sharing plenty of time on the “Allied” set with the hunky star.
“This situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up,” Cotillard wrote. “Many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need.”
She was talking about Guillaume Canet, not Brad Pitt.
